Which is the only reason anybody wears a necklace this long.
Long necklaces usually fail on weight. Anything strung on metal or stone at this length pulls at the back of the neck within an hour, so it comes off at lunch and lives in a bag. That is why most long necklaces are worn twice.
Each bead here is wrapped by hand in mulberry silk over a light core, and the whole strand weighs less than a folded scarf. There is no clasp, because at 44 inches it goes over your head. Nothing to fasten, nothing to tarnish, nothing to fail.

Three lengths from one necklace
Long, as it comes Straight over the head, hanging to just below the sternum. This is the version that works over a plain crewneck or a shirt dress, and the one that makes a simple outfit look considered.
Doubled Loop it twice for two strands sitting at collarbone and mid-chest. Denser, more deliberate, and the version that reads as jewelry rather than as an accessory.
Knotted once A single loose knot at the sternum shortens it and breaks the line. The easiest way to make it look like you did something rather than put something on.
Wrapped at the wrist Four or five turns and a tuck. Not the point of it, but it works, and it is what people do with it on a warm day.
Ivory is the quietest color we make this in. It sits with everything, which is its whole argument, and it will not be the thing anybody comments on — if you want that, the printed versions are $75.
FROM THE ATELIER
Ivory is the hardest of these to keep clean in a workshop and the one we make fewest of, but it is the colorway people who already own one come back for.
It is also the piece we hand to somebody who says they do not really wear jewelry, because it does not read as jewelry until you look twice.
Silk instead of metal, and what actually changes
A metal chain takes the temperature of the room before it takes yours. In January it is cold against the collarbone for the first minute; in August it sticks. Silk does neither — it sits at body temperature within seconds and stays there, which is the difference between a necklace you wear and one you remember to wear.
The second difference is knitwear. A metal link catches on a loose knit and pulls a thread, which is why long chains and winter jumpers are a bad pairing. A silk-wrapped bead has nothing to catch with.
The third is the clasp. Clasps are the part of a necklace that fails, and the part people struggle with behind their own neck. At 44 inches there is no need for one, so there is not one.
Three things it lets you stop doing
A specification is worth nothing until you can say what changes because of it.
A 44-inch strand goes over the head. Nothing to fumble with behind your neck, nothing to work loose during the day, and no spring ring to give out in two years.
You stop asking somebody to do it up for you.
The reason long necklaces sit unworn is that they pull. A silk-wrapped bead over a light core weighs a fraction of stone or metal at the same size, so an hour in it feels the same as a minute.
You stop taking it off at lunch.
Each bead is covered individually in mulberry silk and closed so the join sits inward, out of sight. Machine-wrapped beads show a seam and they show it in the same place on every bead, which is the tell. Turn a strand over in the light: if the joins line up, it was not done by hand.
You stop finding a seam facing you.
Why $64
A 44-inch strand is a lot of beads, and every one of them is wrapped and closed by hand. That is the whole cost. There is no metal, no stone and no plating here, so what you are paying for is time rather than material.
Plain silk is $64 and the printed versions are $75, and the difference is the printing: those carry the same hand screen-printed motifs as our scarves, which means the cloth goes through the press before it is ever cut into wrapping. We make the whole thing in our own atelier in Hanoi, post it straight to you, and pay the US import duty.
How to care for a silk-wrapped necklace
Do not put it in water. This is the one piece we make that cannot be washed at all. Each bead has a core inside the silk and an adhesive holding the wrap closed, and soaking the strand will loosen both. There is no way back from it.
Wipe it instead. A slightly damp cloth on the surface, then leave it to dry flat, away from heat. That handles anything a necklace realistically picks up.
Put it on last. Perfume, hairspray and body lotion all mark silk, and the neckline is where all three land. Dress, spray, then put the necklace on.
Store it flat or hanging, not wound. Wound tightly in a box the strand takes a set and the beads sit against each other. Flat in the box it came in is ideal.
Keep it out of direct sun. Ivory yellows in sunlight faster than a dyed silk fades.
What it is made of, exactly
A fair question, because silk-wrapped beads are not a common object and the phrase does not tell you much.
Each bead is a light core — not stone, not metal — covered by hand in a piece of 100% mulberry silk cut from the same cloth we make scarves from. The silk is drawn around the bead and closed at one point, and that join is turned inward as the strand is assembled so it faces away from the eye.
Between the beads the cord is knotted, which is standard practice on any strung necklace and does two things: it stops the beads rubbing against each other, and if the cord ever breaks you lose one bead rather than all of them.
The result is closer in feel to fabric than to jewelry. It moves when you move, it does not swing, and it makes no sound.
Getting it there in time
If there is a date attached to this, it is worth reading before you order.
Nine to fifteen business days to a US address, counted from the day it leaves Hanoi. That is the honest range, not a best case.
Add a week in December, and add a week around Lunar New Year in late January or February. Both holidays slow things down at both ends — ours and yours.
Ship it straight to her. Sending it to yourself first and forwarding it adds a week you do not need to spend. We write your note by hand and there is no price anywhere in the parcel.
If the date is fixed, tell us at checkout and we will say honestly whether it will make it. We would rather lose the order than miss the day.

Buying this as a gift?
Jewelry is difficult to give because taste in metal is specific and hard to guess. This sidesteps the whole problem: there is no metal in it, no size to get right, and nothing that has to match anything she already owns.
For somebody who says she does not wear jewelry The most useful thing on this page. It is soft, it weighs nothing and it makes no sound, so it does not feel like putting jewelry on. Ivory is the version that asks the least.
For somebody with a metal allergy There is no metal here at all, including no clasp. That is unusual and it is the reason people buy a second one.
To go with a scarf The printed versions are wrapped in the same cloth as our squares, so a scarf and a necklace can be bought in the same motif. Tell us and we will cut them from the same length.
When NOT to give this If she wears fine jewelry and prefers it, this is the wrong category rather than the wrong piece. A silk square is the safer gift in that case.
