The pattern is woven into the cloth, not printed on top of it.
Which is the only part of a tie that fails.

A necktie gets folded in exactly the same place every time it is worn. Print a pattern onto silk and that ink layer sits on the surface, and after enough knotting the fold line starts to crack, then lift, then show pale. It is the single most common way a tie dies, and it has nothing to do with the silk.

This is jacquard. The dragon is woven, which means the pattern is built from the direction of the threads themselves rather than laid on afterward. Run a thumbnail across it and you feel weave, not ink. There is no layer to crack because there is no layer.

100% mulberry silk, black, 8cm wide, made in our Hanoi atelier.

We pay the import duty, not you.

Nothing owed on arrival, nothing added at checkout. Shipping is $20, free from $90. Sent from Hanoi, most US orders land in 9 to 15 business days.

Buying this as a gift? A tie needs no size and no measurements, it arrives in a rigid gift box with a story card, and your note is written by hand with no price anywhere in the parcel.

Where a black dragon tie goes

With a charcoal or navy suit Black is the tie color that never has to be thought about, and the woven dragon is what stops it being anonymous. At conversation distance somebody sees a pattern; across a table they see a plain black tie.

With a white shirt, no jacket The version for a room where nobody else is wearing a tie. Weave reads as texture in daylight, which is the difference between deliberate and overdressed.

Weddings and funerals both The two occasions where a printed pattern is a risk and a plain black tie is a safe but bleak choice. This sits between them.

With a black suit Tone on tone. The dragon is the only thing that distinguishes the tie from the jacket, and it is enough.

Where it does not work: with a patterned shirt. A woven dragon is a quiet pattern but it is still a pattern, and two of them at a collar is one too many.

FROM THE ATELIER

It is also the one we recommend when somebody is buying a first silk tie and does not know the recipient's wardrobe, because there is no wardrobe it clashes with.

Woven or printed, and why it matters more on a tie than anywhere else

On a scarf, printing is the better technique. It holds finer detail than weaving can, and a scarf is not folded in the same place twice. On a tie the opposite is true, and the reason is mechanical rather than aesthetic.

A tie is knotted at the same point every day and hangs under its own weight for hours. A printed pattern is pigment sitting on the surface of the fibers, so the fold works that layer back and forth until it fractures. You see it first as a dull line at the knot, then as pale threads showing through.

Jacquard has nothing to fracture. The pattern is a difference in how the threads run, so the fold is just cloth folding. The trade is that weaving cannot hold the fine detail printing can, which is why our scarves are printed and every tie we make is woven.

Three things it lets you stop doing

A specification is worth nothing until you can say what changes because of it.

01
No ink layer at the knot

The fold line is where a printed tie shows its age first. There is no printed layer here to crack, lift or go pale.

You stop replacing ties that still fit.

02
Eight centimeters, which is the width that stays right

Tie widths move with fashion and 8cm is the middle of the road: wide enough not to read as a skinny tie, narrow enough not to read as a nineties one. It works with almost every lapel currently being made.

You stop owning ties that date themselves.

03
A pattern that reads at two distances

Across a table this is a black tie. At conversation distance the dragon appears. That is a property of weave rather than print: a woven figure catches light at an angle instead of announcing itself flat, so it is quiet in a photograph and present in a room.

You stop choosing between plain and noticeable.

Why $82

Jacquard costs more to make than printing before a single thread is woven, because the pattern has to be built into the loom setup rather than applied to finished cloth. A short run of a custom weave carries that setup cost across far fewer meters than a mill weaving one pattern by the mile.

The dragon itself was redrawn by hand from the stonework of the imperial citadel in Hanoi and then translated into a weave structure, which is a different job from preparing a print screen and a harder one. The tie is cut and sewn in our own atelier, posted straight to you, and we pay the US import duty.

How to care for a silk tie

Dry clean only. This is not the same advice we give for scarves, and the reason is construction. A tie is three layers - the outer silk, a wool or cotton interlining that gives it body, and the tipping at the ends - all cut on the bias so the tie hangs straight. Water makes those layers shrink at different rates, and once that happens the tie twists and there is no way back.

Never machine wash and never hand wash. A stain goes to a cleaner, not a sink.

Untie it properly. Reverse the knot rather than pulling the narrow end through. Pulling stretches the bias and is the second most common way a tie is ruined.

Hang it or roll it. Hanging lets the bias settle overnight. Rolling loosely is better for a drawer or a suitcase than folding, which sets a crease across the width.

Creases fall out on their own. A day on a hanger does more than an iron will, and silk at this weight recovers without help.

The dragon, and where it comes from

Hanoi's imperial citadel, Hoang Thanh Thang Long, was begun in 1010. The dragon carved into its stone is not the ferocious creature most people picture when they hear the word.

Ly Dynasty dragons move in a long slow curve like water rather than coiling to strike. No scales. Three claws. A body that tapers steadily toward the tail. From the nostrils comes a burst of flame, and on the forehead sits a small S-shaped mark - the archaic form of the character for thunder, which in a wet-rice civilization means rain, and rain means the harvest.

So the reading is agricultural rather than martial. It is not a warning. It is closer to a wish for a good year, which is why it ended up carved into the parts of a palace that people walked past every day.

Worth knowing if you are giving this: it is a Vietnamese dragon from a specific two hundred years, not a generic Asian one, and the difference is visible to anybody who knows the period.

Which tie should I be looking at?

Jacquard, from $61 Pattern woven into the cloth. Nothing to crack at the fold, and the pattern reads as texture rather than as graphic. This is the construction for a tie meant to be worn every week for years. The dragon jacquards at $82 carry the Ly Dynasty dragon; the geometric ones at $61 carry dots, grids and stripes.

Jacquard, $97: geometric designs in 6 cm and 8 cm, woven like the rest.

Tie and cufflinks sets, $61 A jacquard tie with matching cufflinks in one box. A complete gift under a hundred dollars.

Width 8cm is standard and works with almost every lapel. The 6cm slim suits narrow lapels and younger cuts.

Getting it there in time

If there is a date attached to this, it is worth reading before you order.

Nine to fifteen business days to a US address, counted from the day it leaves Hanoi. That is the honest range, not a best case.

For Christmas delivery in the US, we recommend ordering by November 27.

Ship it straight to him. Sending it to yourself first and forwarding it adds a week you do not need to spend. We write your note by hand and there is no price anywhere in the parcel.

If the date is fixed, tell us at checkout and we will say honestly whether it will make it. We would rather lose the order than miss the day.

Buying this as a gift?

A tie is the one piece of men's clothing that needs no measurements, suits any build, and does not require you to know his taste beyond one color. Black removes even that.

For a father The default gift that usually goes wrong because it is chosen without a reason. This one has a reason: the weave will still look like this in five years, and the dragon means a good year rather than power.

For somebody starting a job that requires a tie A first serious tie is worth being a good one, and black jacquard is the one that works on every day of the first month.

For a wedding, as a groomsman gift A woven black works under any suit color the party ends up in.

When NOT to give this If you want the gift to feel complete rather than singular, the tie and cufflinks sets are $61.

  • History Of The Necktie

The origin of the necktie is widely debated with traces found in ancient Egypt, Rome and China. Egyptians wore necktie to signify status, Roman soldiers used them for warmth, and Qin Dynasty warriors had silk ones. In the 17th century, Croatian soldiers presented neckties to France, where King Louis XIV popularized them. From there, neckties spread across Europe, evolving into their modern form in the 1920s. October 18 is now celebrated as International Necktie Day.

  • A Symbol Of Sophistication

A necktie is more than just an ordinary fashion accessory—it is a bold symbol of sophistication. With a single necktie, a gentleman can transform his style, from the classic elegance of the 1920s to the refined charm of the 21st century. Rather than following fleeting trends, Folk Form honors minimalism and timeless factors through meticulously crafted neckties—designed not for the masses, but for those who truly understand the essence of luxury.

1. Mulberry Silk Necktie Products

1.1 Is silk environmentally friendly? How can I distinguish silk from other artificial silk fabrics?

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

100% Silk

  • Burns quickly but extinguishes immediately.
  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
  • Leaves an unpleasant burnt plastic smell and ash that forms clumps and sticks to hands.

The materials used in Folk Form’s products are independently tested at the Textile Testing Center (TTC) under the Vietnam Textile Research Institute.

What tie size should I choose? What criteria should I consider?

Folk Form offers two tie widths:

  • 6cm width: Sleek and modern, perfect for a youthful, minimalist look or slim-fit outfits.
  • 8cm width: Classic and refined, ideal for traditional styles or standard-fit suits that enhance a sophisticated presence.

For body type:

  • Slim or petite individuals, or those preferring a modern style, may opt for the 6cm width for a balanced look.
  • Taller or broader individuals, or those who favor a classic aesthetic, can choose the 8cm width to complement their frame.

For different occasions:

  • 6cm width: Suitable for casual gatherings, creative events, or social engagements.
  • 8cm width: Ideal for formal ceremonies, business settings, or occasions requiring a polished appearance.
1.3 How should I select tie patterns? What criteria should I consider?

Folk Form offers a variety of patterns to match different styles and occasions:

By Personal Style:

  • Minimalist & Elegant: "Net," "Grid," and "Dot" patterns provide a refined, versatile look for work and formal events.
  • Classic & Luxurious: "Plaid," "Chessboard," and "Letter T" designs evoke heritage and timeless sophistication.
  • Artistic & Expressive: "Color Dot," "Color Stripe," and "Color Block" add a vibrant, free-spirited touch.

By Occasion:

  • Everyday work or business meetings: Choose simple designs like "Dot," "Grid," or "Net" in neutral tones for easy coordination.
  • Special events, weddings, or celebrations: Bold patterns like "Color Dot," "Chessboard," or "Color Block" create a striking statement.
  • Gifting purposes: Symbolic designs like "Letter T" or "Plaid" offer cultural significance and practical versatility.

By Personality & Aesthetic Preferences:

  • Lovers of serene elegance may prefer nature-inspired motifs like "Dot" or "Grid."
  • Those who appreciate tradition can find cultural depth in "Letter T" or "Chessboard."

Individuals with a modern and dynamic taste can choose "Color Dot" or "Color Stripe" for a youthful, contemporary feel.
