At the long table on her birthday, the lid lifts and the tissue folds back, and a deep red dragon silk scarf spills over her hands as the Ly Dynasty drawing turns in the lamplight. Dragon Dreams comes in four sizes, and the right one follows the moments you imagine for her: a knot at the neck, a band through her hair, or silk laid across her shoulders at a late dinner. Whichever size you choose, it is the same 100% Grade 5A mulberry silk at 16 momme, printed on both faces so the red runs as deep on the reverse, with the edges rolled and stitched by hand.

A dragon that offers its pearl

Dragon Dreams is drawn from the dragons carved in the stone of Hanoi's imperial citadel, begun in 1010. On the open square, four Ly Dynasty dragons curve in from the corners toward a bodhi leaf at the center, their slender bodies moving like water among lotus flowers and fragrance clouds.

Look closely and each one carries a pearl at its mouth. In the Lotus Sutra, where that image comes from, the dragon offers her pearl freely, and that gesture of giving is the heart of the design.

It reads as strength that gives, a fitting thing to place in your mother's hands on Mother's Day. The story card in the box names the motif and its dynasty, and our guide to what the Dragon Dreams motif means tells the rest, so when a friend admires it over lunch she has the whole story ready.

Red is the warm colorway, deep and glowing as the silk turns. Over black, navy, camel or white, it becomes the single bright note in whatever she wears.

Is it real silk?

Yes, 100% Grade 5A mulberry silk, tested at the Textile Testing Center of the Vietnam Textile Research Institute, an outside lab.

The box also holds a small cutting of silk for you to test. Burn a thread of it over a sink, away from anything flammable, with no children nearby. Silk burns with a smell like burning hair and leaves a soft ash that crushes between your fingers. Polyester melts into a hard bead. It is a home check, not lab proof.

Will she find red too bold?

She decides how much red to show by the way she folds it. Folded to a slim band or knotted small over black, white, gray or denim, it becomes one considered flash of color at the throat.

If she dresses very quietly, the navy Dragon Dreams is the same scarf in a calmer color.

For the woman who says she cannot tie a scarf

She needs no pins, rings or practice. A headband, a ponytail wrap, a neck knot and a bag roll each come together at the mirror in under a minute, and the illustrated guide in the box shows more than 20 ways to wear it.

What $75 to $197 buys

Each hem is rolled and stitched by hand, which takes close to an hour even on the smallest square. Both faces go through the press separately, one screen and one pass per color, and the motif was redrawn from archive sources before any screen was made.

Each step up in size is a real step up in silk. Moving from the 26 to the 36 nearly doubles the cloth, from 676 to 1,296 square inches, and the hand-rolled edge grows from about 8.5 to 12 feet.

Worn once a week for five years, the 22 inch costs under 30 cents a wear and the 26 inch under 40 cents. We make everything in our own Hanoi atelier and ship direct, with the import duty paid.

Will it arrive in time?

1 to 3 business days of processing, then 9 to 15 business days to a US address.

Mother's Day is the second Sunday of May. For that or her birthday, allow up to 18 business days, about three and a half weeks. For Christmas delivery in the US, we recommend ordering by November 27.

Duties and returns

Duties: we pay the US import duty, so she owes nothing at the door.

Returns: 30 days, unused and unwashed, in the original box. Change-of-mind return postage is paid by you. Store credit instead of a refund adds 15%.

How to care for it

Wash every 3 to 5 wears. Silk sheds dust on its own.

Cold water with shampoo or body wash, not laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry in the shade. Use the lowest silk setting on the iron, with the scarf faintly damp.

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
  • Leaves an unpleasant burnt plastic smell and ash that forms clumps and sticks to hands.

The materials used in Folk Form’s products are independently tested at the Textile Testing Center (TTC) under the Vietnam Textile Research Institute.
