Four dragons, and a wish for her years ahead
Dragon Dreams is drawn from the stone carving of Hoang Thanh Thang Long, Hanoi's imperial citadel, begun in 1010. Four Ly Dynasty dragons hold the corners of the square and turn inward, with bodhi leaves, lotus flowers and fragrance clouds drifting between them across the blue.
At 44 inches nothing is cropped: the drawing runs right out to the border of Xi Van, the fire-guarding creature once set on the roofs of pagodas and communal houses, so when she lays it open she sees every line.
Each dragon holds a pearl, and in the Lotus Sutra, where that image comes from, the dragon offers it instead of keeping it. Look closely at each forehead and you will find an S-shaped mark, an old character for thunder. In rice country thunder meant rain, and rain meant a harvest, so the dragon carries a wish for good years ahead.

What is in the set, and is the scarf sold alone?

Royal blue at 44 inches is not listed in our shop as a scarf on its own; this set is how it comes. If navy suits her better, the 44 inch Dragon Dreams in navy is sold alone, also at $197.
Everything else in the parcel is standard with any Folk Form scarf. There is a rigid box and a matching bag, tissue around the scarf, and a story card naming the motif and its dynasty. An illustrated styling guide, a care card and a small silk cutting complete it. Your message, written by hand, goes in too.
Is it real silk?
Yes. It is 100% Grade 5A mulberry silk at 16 momme. An outside lab tested it: the Textile Testing Center at the Vietnam Textile Research Institute.
The silk cutting in the box lets anyone check. Burned over a sink, away from anything flammable, silk smells like burning hair and leaves a soft ash that crushes between your fingers; polyester melts into a hard bead. It is a home check, not lab proof.

What $197 holds
A 44 inch square takes far more silk than a 26 inch, and a much longer edge to finish. That edge is rolled and stitched by hand, all the way round.
Each face of the silk goes under the screens separately, one color per pass. The motif itself was redrawn by our studio from archive photographs. All of it happens in our Hanoi atelier, and the parcel ships direct with the import duty paid.
Will it arrive for her birthday?
1 to 3 business days before it leaves Hanoi, then 9 to 15 business days to her door.
Count back 18 business days, about three and a half weeks, from the party. Earlier is better if the family is traveling.
Duties and returns
Duties: we pay the US import duty. Nothing is collected at her door.
Returns: within 30 days, unused and unwashed, in the original box. Change-of-mind return postage is paid by you; store credit adds 15%.

How to care for it
Wash every 3 to 5 wears.
Cold water, with shampoo or body wash. Never laundry detergent. Squeeze the water out; never wring. Dry it in the shade. Iron on the lowest silk setting, faintly damp.
