A 44-inch square, 110 centimeters, of mulberry silk in deep navy, hand screen-printed with a Ly Dynasty dragon drawn from eleventh-century stonework in Hanoi. It folds smaller than a paperback and weighs less than a phone, so it goes wherever she goes.

A dark ground, printed with care

Laying a light drawing onto a dark ground takes real depth of ink, and doing it twice so that both faces match takes patience. Turn this square over and the reverse is as rich as the face, the drawing as clear on one side as on the other.

That matters most in use, because a wrap folds back on itself all day, over a shoulder, through a knot, down an arm. Every fold shows the reverse to the person across the table, and here every fold looks finished.

Then the edge, close to fifteen feet of it on a 44-inch square, turned twice by hand and closed with a needle. It is slow and patient work, and it is the detail anyone who knows silk looks for when the box is opened.

Weight is what lets a large square hang, and this one has enough to stay across her back from boarding to landing, and through a long dinner after.

Opened out, it covers both shoulders and the upper arms; folded once on the diagonal, it becomes a wrap. It is the layer she reaches for when the evening turns, and the one she tucks around her on a long flight.

The drawing sets one large dragon in each corner, all turning inward, and nothing is tiled, so every screen has to land across the full width of the cloth and again on the reverse. At this scale that care shows at arm's length, and so does its reward: a composition that reads cleanly from every side.

Navy carries a splash of coffee, a dusty platform and the everyday wear of a travel layer with grace. A square cut has no year in it and nothing to outgrow, so it will look as right on the next trip as on this one.

At 1,936 square inches against 676 for a 26-inch square, this is almost three times the cloth, with close to double the hem. Every part of the work grows with the edge and the area, and none of it is quicker for being done at once.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Each Folk Form motif carries its own meaning, so choose by the person and the moment. A short guide:

Here four large dragons sit at the four corners, turning in toward the center, and 44 inches holds the whole of the drawing; Dragon of Grace sets the same Ly Dynasty dragon smaller, in center symmetry, so it reads as a finely worked surface.

Worth knowing at this size: a wrap spends much of its life folded over a shoulder, so a large composition shows in pieces as it moves, while a dense repeat shows from every angle. An easy rule of thumb: dragons mark what someone has achieved, and the phoenix celebrates who she is.

“$197 is a lot for a scarf”

The dragon of Thang Long

Work on Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel at the heart of Hanoi, began in 1010. The dragon carved into its stone is a creature of water, traveling in a long unhurried curve, head lifted, a pearl held at the mouth and a crest of flame behind.

Its meaning is rain, rivers and a harvest that arrives, a wish for a good year. Bodhi leaves and lotus drift through the drawing, and at 44 inches the whole composition opens across the cloth; the story continues in our note on what the Dragon Dreams motif means.

Every motif is redrawn by hand in our studio from archive photographs and separated into screens, one color and one pass at a time, which is why the lines keep the softness of a hand-drawn curve.

How to wash silk without ruining it

Rarely. A wrap worn over clothes rather than against skin barely needs washing at all, and silk sheds dust on its own. Once a season is normal for a piece this size.

When it does: cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent, squeeze rather than wring, dry flat in shade and never in sun. Iron on the lowest silk setting while faintly damp. Dark grounds hold their depth for years treated this way.

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
