Picture the long table, candles lit and glasses raised: across her shoulders a silk shawl of orange and dark green catches every flicker, the orange glowing like embers against the darker ground as she turns to speak. A square has no cut to date it, so she will wear it tonight and for as many years as she loves it.

Forty-four inches, a hundred and ten centimeters, of mulberry silk, hand screen-printed with a Ly Dynasty dragon drawn from eleventh-century stonework in Hanoi. It is the largest square we make, generous enough to cover both shoulders at once.

Where orange and dark green belong

Black, in the evening Against black the dark green sinks away and the orange carries the room, the boldest way to wear this colorway and the reason to choose it at full size.

Inside a camel or tan coat Worn open down the front so the orange appears at the lapel and the green stays quiet, the version that looks right at nine in the morning.

White and cream linen Summer, when both colors sit at full strength against almost nothing, the pairing this palette seems drawn for.

Denim and a t-shirt Folded on the diagonal and thrown on, with a third of the cloth showing, so it reads as warm color more than pattern.

At 44 inches the whole composition opens across the cloth and both colors run at full strength, a bold contrast chosen with intent. If you would rather the shawl murmur than speak, the navy is the quieter choice.

The work inside the square

Nearly fifteen feet of edge runs around a 44-inch square, and every inch of it is turned twice by hand and stitched closed with a needle. It is the slowest work in the atelier and it cannot be hurried without showing, which is why a hand-rolled hem is the detail connoisseurs look for.

Then the print: each color has its own screen, pulled by hand one pass at a time, and the whole cloth goes through twice so both faces carry the same ink at the same density. On a square this size that second run doubles the press time, and it is why the reverse looks as finished as the face.

Before any of that, our studio sat with archive photographs of eleventh-century stone and redrew the dragon by hand so it could be separated into screens, work done once for this motif and kept in our own hands.

Silk with a true fall

A large square needs weight to hang, and at sixteen momme this one falls from the shoulders in a single line and stays across her back through a whole dinner.

From scarf to shawl

At this size a scarf becomes the finishing layer of the outfit: opened out, it covers both shoulders and the upper arms, and folded once on the diagonal, it becomes a wrap. It is the layer she draws on when the evening turns and the conversation carries on outdoors.

Four corners, one composition

One large dragon sits in each corner, all four turning inward, and nothing repeats, so every screen must land across the full width of the cloth and land again on the reverse. The result reads as one composed picture, clean from arm's length to across the room.

Orange and green, each in its own pass

Where two strong colors meet, the boundary between them is where care shows. Here each color is laid down through its own screen at full density, front and back, so the edge between orange and green stays sharp, and a square cut, with no year in it and nothing to outgrow, keeps the whole piece current for as long as she wears it.

What goes into $197

Measured against a 26-inch square, this is almost three times the cloth, 1,936 square inches to 676, and close to double the hem. Every hour of handwork scales with its edge and its area, and none of it becomes lighter at this size.

Compare it with the evening wrap you might otherwise buy, a viscose pashmina or a wool stole. This one is silk, drawn from a thousand-year-old carving, and it packs to the size of a paperback.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Each motif we print speaks to a different moment, and a few words are enough to find the right one:

Buying for an achievement A promotion, a milestone, a leader, a corporate gift: these call for a dragon, and we draw two. This one gathers four large dragons at the corners, turned toward the center, with the whole drawing held at 44 inches; Dragon of Grace draws the same Ly Dynasty dragon smaller, repeated in center symmetry, so the meaning is the same and the texture denser.

Buying for a person When the gift celebrates who she is, a mother or a woman starting over, choose Phoenix Dance: the empress's bird, partner to the emperor's dragon, printed in the soft pastels its meaning asks for.

Buying for a couple For two people, a wedding or an anniversary, the mandarin ducks carry that wish, a pair of birds beneath one lotus.

Something to know at this size: a shawl spends much of its life folded over a shoulder, so a large picture reveals itself in pieces as she moves, while a dense repeat shows from every side. In short, a dragon honors what someone has done, and the phoenix honors who she is.

“$197 is a lot for a scarf”

It is. So the question worth asking is not whether it is expensive, it is how many times it gets used, because that is the only number that decides whether something was worth buying.

Ways to wear forty-four inches

She can open it across both shoulders as a shawl, throw it on the diagonal with the points falling in front, or knot it at one shoulder for a single, sweeping drape. The dragon, and the story in the stone

Building began on Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel at the heart of Hanoi, in 1010, and the dragon carved into its stone is gentle, shaped like moving water. It travels in a long unhurried curve, head lifted, a pearl held at the mouth and a crest of flame behind.

Its meaning is a farmer's wish, rain and full rivers and a harvest that arrives, a wish for a good year. Bodhi leaves and lotus drift through the composition, and at 44 inches you see all of it; read more about what the Dragon Dreams motif means.

Our studio redraws every motif by hand from archive photographs before it is separated into screens, so each curve of this dragon keeps the ease of a drawn line.

How to wash silk without ruining it

Rarely. A wrap worn over clothes rather than against skin barely needs washing at all, and silk sheds dust on its own. Once a season is normal for a piece this size.

When it does: cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent, squeeze rather than wring, dry flat in shade and never in sun. Iron on the lowest silk setting while faintly damp. The care card is in the box.

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.

When combined with handmade screen printing, the final product features clear details, vibrant colors, and uniform quality on both sides of the fabric— a level of precision that most other printing methods cannot achieve.
