Picture a bright weekend morning: she winds ninety centimeters of orange and dark green over her hair, hairline to nape, tucks the ends once, and steps out with the orange catching the sun at every turn of her head. The whole head of hair is covered and finished, with cloth to spare for a soft knot at the nape.

Thirty-six inches, ninety centimeters, of mulberry silk, hand screen-printed with a Ly Dynasty dragon drawn from eleventh-century stonework in Hanoi. With nearly thirteen hundred square inches of cloth, it wraps, crosses and tucks without a pin, and it stays in place through the night as easily as through the day.

Where orange and dark green goes at this size

Wrapped full, over camel or cream Warm against warm, with the dark green holding the whole thing down. The pairing that carries this colorway from October to March.

As a turban, with denim and white Two plain things and one high-contrast turban. Nothing else in the outfit has to make a decision.

Against an olive or dark green coat Tonal on the green, which leaves the orange as the only bright note in the frame. The least obvious pairing here and the best one.

Overnight A mid-tone ground sits between the extremes. It hides hair oil longer than the pale colorways, not as long as the navy. Slept in nightly, it still only needs a wash every few wears.

Worth knowing before you choose: this is the highest-contrast colorway we print, and a head wrap is the largest block of color anyone will see near your face. If you want a wrap that does not announce itself, the navy does the identical job. This one announces.

Long hair, thick hair and tight coils all need cloth to wrap, twist and tuck, and ninety centimeters gives it generously. Fine or short hair needs less, and the extra silk becomes a fuller knot or a longer tail at the nape.

Wrapped and tucked, the cloth turns over four or five times before it is finished, and on a two-color ground every turn would show a pale reverse. Here both faces carry the orange and the green at full depth, so each fold looks as rich as the open square.

Anybody can print the word silk on a label. Very few will hand you a match.

If you do it: over a sink, clear of anything that can catch, not with children in the room. A corner is enough. It is a home check, not lab proof.

Prefer paperwork to open flame? The silk is tested at the Textile Testing Center, part of the Vietnam Textile Research Institute. An outside lab, and their document, not ours.

The step from $97 to $153

You are buying area, and area climbs quickly: from 26 inches to 36 is about a third more on each side and nearly double the cloth, 676 square inches rising to 1,296.

The hem grows too, with twelve feet of edge turned, rolled and stitched by hand here against roughly eight and a half feet on the 26-inch, patient work that lengthens with every inch. Two colors also mean two screens and two alignments, each one another pass that has to land exactly.

Compared with buying a satin bonnet, a polyester head wrap and a neck scarf one at a time, this is a single square of silk that does the work of all three, and looks lovely doing it.

“Isn’t 36 inches too big for me?”

It is the question every large square hears, and the answer is no, because it is folded down before it is worn. Knot it at the neck and it looks nearly the size of a 26-inch square; the difference is a softer, fuller fall at the ends.

Size only shows when you want it to. Folded to a band it is a headband. Folded to a triangle it is a neck scarf. Opened out it is a head wrap or a shoulder cover. Nothing forces you to use all of it.

A dragon made of water and rain

Hoang Thanh Thang Long, Hanoi's imperial citadel, was begun in 1010, and the dragons carved in its stone are river creatures, long and slow in their curve, head raised, a pearl at the mouth and a crest of flame behind.

They carry a farming people's wish for rain, water and a harvest that comes in, a wish for a good year. Bodhi leaves and lotus gather around the dragon, and at this size much of the composition opens across the wrap; our note on what this dragon motif means tells the whole story.

How to wash silk without ruining it

Less often than people assume. Silk sheds dust by itself, so every three to five wears is plenty. That holds for a wrap slept in nightly too.

Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring or twist. Dry in shade, never in sun. Iron on the lowest silk setting while it is still faintly damp. The care card is in the box.

Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
