Twenty-two inches of mulberry silk, hand screen-printed with a Ly Dynasty dragon drawn from eleventh-century stonework in Hanoi. It packs so small you forget it is there, and at sixteen momme it is dense enough for a knot to settle and hold.

What orange and dark green goes with at this size

Tan and cognac leather Warm on warm, with the dark green stopping it going sweet. If the bag is brown, this is the colorway that was waiting for it.

Black leather Against black the green recedes almost completely and the orange does all the work. The most assertive of the four pairings here.

Olive canvas and waxed cotton Tonal with the green, which leaves the orange as the only bright note in the frame. Weekend bags and field jackets.

Your wrist, over a white cuff Two turns and a knot, tails loose. Against a rolled white shirtsleeve the contrast reads as deliberate rather than as decoration.

This is the highest-contrast colorway we print. Two colors in opposition with the dark green acting as the brake, which is why at a narrow roll it reads as considered rather than bright. If you would rather it read as nothing at all, take the navy.

What goes into $75

The $12 one is a printed polyester bandana. The two can look alike on a screen, and in the hand the polyester is thin and slippery beside this silk's soft, weighted drape.

Small squares carry the same handwork. Rolling the hem by hand still runs close to an hour because the edge does not shrink with the square, both faces still go through the press separately, and two colors still mean two screens and two alignments. The motif was redrawn by hand from archive photographs before either screen was cut, so going small saves silk and nothing else, which is how it comes to $75 beside $97 for the larger square, and why it could never be $12.

The dragon, and the citadel it guards

Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel at the heart of Hanoi, was begun in 1010, and the dragon carved into its stone is surprisingly gentle. Ly Dynasty dragons move in a slow curve like water, head lifted, a pearl at the mouth and a crest of flame behind, and their meaning is rain, rivers and a harvest safely home: a wish for a good year.

Bodhi leaves and lotus gather around him. Our studio traces each line by hand from archive photographs and then separates the drawing into screens, a single color with each pass.

Returns, and how to wash it

Thirty days from delivery, unused and unwashed, in the box it came in. If the fault is ours, a flaw in the silk or a failed seam, postage goes both ways on us. Changed your mind and the return postage is yours, or take store credit and we add fifteen percent.

Washing. Every three to five wears is plenty, silk sheds dust on its own. Cold water, shampoo rather than detergent, squeeze rather than wring, dry in shade and never in sun, because sun dulls a warm color before it touches anything else. Iron on the lowest setting while slightly damp.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
