Twenty-two inches of mulberry silk in deep navy, hand screen-printed with a Ly Dynasty dragon drawn from eleventh-century stonework in Hanoi. It folds small enough to live in a coat pocket, and at sixteen momme the cloth is dense enough for a knot to settle and hold.

Rolled narrow, the color leads

Rolled to wind around a handle, a square this size finishes about an inch and a half wide, and at that width the eye reads the deep navy ground, the light traveling along the roll and the fine rolled edge before it notices the drawing.

That is why the edge matters so much here. The hem is rolled and stitched by hand, a slim soft cord you can feel between finger and thumb, and on a handle it stays on show all day.

A roll also turns both faces toward the light as it climbs the handle, and both faces of this square carry the same ink at the same depth, so every turn looks finished.

What $75 buys

The $12 one is a printed polyester bandana. In a photograph the two can look alike, and in the hand the polyester feels slick and light where this silk has body and a soft, even sheen.

Small squares carry the same handwork. The hem does not get shorter because the square did, so rolling it by hand still runs close to an hour, and both faces still go through the press separately. The motif was redrawn by hand from archive photographs before a screen was cut, so going small saves us silk and nothing else, which is why it is $75 against $97 for the larger square, and a long way from $12.

Which motif should I be looking at?

A short guide to our motifs, if you are still deciding:

Buying for an achievement A promotion, a milestone, a leader, a corporate gift: for an achievement, choose a dragon. This drawing is composed around the center of a much larger square, so at 22 inches you carry a graceful section of it. Dragon of Grace is the same Ly Dynasty creature drawn smaller and repeated in center symmetry, which keeps more of its pattern at this size: the same meaning, in a finer rhythm.

Buying for a person A mother, a new chapter, a recovery, a woman you would like to celebrate for who she is. Phoenix Dance carries the empress's bird, partner to the dragon's emperor, printed in soft pastels that suit its gentle meaning.

The dragon, and the citadel behind it

Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel at the heart of Hanoi, was begun in 1010, and the dragon carved into its stone moves with a gentle grace. Ly Dynasty dragons run in a slow curve like water, head lifted, a pearl at the mouth and a crest of flame behind, and they stand for rain, rivers and a harvest coming in, a wish for a good year.

Bodhi leaves and lotus sit around him, and every line was redrawn by hand in our studio from archive photographs before it was divided into screens, one for each color.

Returns, and how to wash it

Thirty days from delivery, unused and unwashed, in the box it came in. If the fault is ours, a flaw in the silk or a failed seam, postage goes both ways on us. Changed your mind and the return postage is yours, or take store credit and we add fifteen percent.

Washing. Every three to five wears is plenty, silk sheds dust on its own, and a dark ground goes longer than a pale one. Cold water, shampoo rather than detergent, squeeze rather than wring, dry in shade, iron on the lowest setting while slightly damp.

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
  • Leaves an unpleasant burnt plastic smell and ash that forms clumps and sticks to hands.
