At a narrow roll, the ground color is the product

Rolled to go around a handle, a square this size finishes about an inch and a half wide. At that width the drawing is mostly gone. What anybody actually sees is the ground color, the way the light runs along the roll, and the edge.

Which puts the weight on two things. The ground has to be a color worth looking at on its own, and the edge has to be a hand-rolled hem rather than a machine-cut one, because on a roll the edge is on permanent display and a fused edge announces itself immediately.

The roll also exposes both faces at once, turning over on itself the whole way up the handle. A one-sided print gives itself away in the first turn. Both faces of this carry the same ink at the same depth.

A specification is worth nothing until you can say what changes because of it.

Sixteen momme in a small square

Most bandanas at this size are eight momme or polyester, and both slide. Doubling the weight is the difference between an accessory and a thing that keeps working itself loose down your wrist.

It goes in a pocket, a glovebox, the front of a laptop bag. Nothing gets worn because it is beautiful. Things get worn because they are already to hand.

A dark ground is the hardest thing to print twice

Putting a light drawing onto navy takes real opacity, and doing it on both faces so they match costs more than most producers will spend. It is why the reverse of almost every dark scarf on the market is pale. It is also the ground that stays looking new the longest, because navy carries a mark on a bag handle in a way that a cream never will.

You stop hiding the wrong side.

How to know it is real, without taking our word for it

Every box holds a small offcut from the same bolt yours was cut from. It exists so you can test the fiber on something that is not the thing you just paid for.

Why $75 and not $12

The $12 one is a printed polyester bandana. It is not this in a cheaper material. It is a different object that resembles this in a photograph and behaves nothing like it against skin or on leather.

Here is the part people miss about small sizes. The hem does not get shorter because the square did, so hand-rolling it still runs close to an hour. Both faces still go through the press separately. The motif still had to be redrawn by hand from archive photographs before a screen was cut. Going small saves us silk and nothing else, which is why it is $75 rather than $97, and not $12.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Folk Form prints several motifs and they are not interchangeable. If you arrived here from a search and are not sure this is the right one, the honest short version:

Buying for an achievement A promotion, a milestone, a leader, a corporate gift. That is dragon territory, and this is one of the two dragons. The drawing is a corner-symmetric composition built around the center of a much larger square, so at 22 inches you are carrying a section of it rather than the whole. Dragon of Grace is the same Ly Dynasty animal drawn smaller and repeated in center symmetry, which is why more of its pattern survives at a small size. Same meaning, different density.

Buying for a person A mother, a new chapter, a recovery, a woman you want to say something to rather than about. That is the phoenix, Phoenix Dance, the empress bird to the dragon's emperor. It is printed in pastels rather than deep colors because the meaning wants them.

Buying for a couple A wedding, an anniversary. The mandarin duck motif is built for that, and it is a different bird entirely.

Worth knowing at this size: rolled narrow, almost any of them reads as ground color rather than as pattern, so the choice here is closer to a color decision than a motif one. Rough rule all the same: dragons for what somebody did, phoenix for who somebody is.

“It looks tiny in the photo”

It is 22 inches, 55 centimeters, roughly the span of your shoulders. On a screen with nothing beside it that number tells you nothing, so here is the plain version: too small for a head wrap, exactly right for everything else you would actually do on a Tuesday.

Around a bag handle Roll it narrow, wind it up the leather, finish with a small bow. The fold it goes back to when you are not wearing it.

At the wrist Two turns and a knot, tails left loose. Reads as deliberate against a watch strap or a plain cuff.

The size to give when you are not sure how much to spend

Every gift has a bracket, and the small ones are the hardest to get right. Under fifty and it reads as an afterthought. Over a hundred and it obliges the other person to feel something.

The dragon, and where it actually comes from

Begun in 1010, Hoang Thanh Thang Long is the imperial citadel at the heart of Hanoi. The dragon carved into its stone is nothing like the ferocious kind people expect. Ly Dynasty dragons run in a slow sine, the way water moves, head lifted, a pearl at the mouth, a crest of flame behind. The reading is not menace. It is rain, rivers, a harvest that arrives.

Bodhi leaves and lotus sit around it. Our studio redraws each motif by hand from archive photographs, then separates it into screens, one color and one pass at a time.

No stock library sells this. That is the part nobody can copy, and the part worth explaining when someone asks.

Returns, and how to wash it

Thirty days from delivery, unused and unwashed, in the box it came in. If the fault is ours, a flaw in the silk or a failed seam, postage goes both ways on us. Changed your mind and the return postage is yours, or take store credit and we add fifteen percent.

Washing. Every three to five wears is plenty, silk sheds dust on its own, and a dark ground goes longer than a pale one. Cold water, shampoo rather than detergent, squeeze rather than wring, dry in shade, iron on the lowest setting while slightly damp.

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:
