Rolled narrow, nobody will ever count the dragons.
That is exactly why this is the one that gets used.

A 22-inch square spends most of its life rolled to about two inches wide, wound up a bag handle or twice round a wrist. At that width nothing reads as a picture. You see a band of colour with work in it, and either that band looks like good cloth or it looks like a cropped photograph of something.

Fifty-five centimetres of Vietnamese mulberry silk in dark green, hand screen-printed in Hanoi with May Hoa Long An, Cloud-Painted Dragon Grace. The full composition is eight Ly Dynasty dragons in centre symmetry, and it sits complete on the largest square. At this size you have a portion of it, which is the whole point.

What dark green does at this size

Round a tan or cognac handle The reason this colourway exists at 22 inches. Green on brown leather is the oldest quiet combination in luggage, and it makes an ordinary bag look like it was chosen rather than bought.

At the wrist, over a white cuff Two turns and a knot, tails loose. Deep green against a rolled white shirtsleeve reads as deliberate without reading as decoration.

A short neck knot Fold to a triangle, roll, one wrap, knot off-centre. Over grey or cream this is the whole outfit.

Through a ponytail, or under a hat band Wound twice at the elastic. Dark green is the one colour here that works in both January and July.

One honest limit: black leather. At this width a deep green against black stops reading as green and starts reading as dark trim. If the bag is black and you want it to look different rather than merely finished, take the red or the yellow.

Same size, other colourways: Yellow · Red · Turquoise

★★★★★

It is not slippery or flimsy like some others I have tried. It stays in place and feels great on my skin even in warm weather.

MAYA M. · VERIFIED BUYER · FOLK FORM SILK

Why a dense motif is the right one to buy small

Folk Form draws one Ly Dynasty dragon and arranges it two ways. Dragon Dreams puts four of them at the four corners, turning toward a bodhi leaf at the centre. Dragon of Grace, this one, puts eight in centre symmetry. Both compositions sit complete on the largest square, and every smaller square is a portion of one.

Which portion you get is what changes. A four-dragon layout cropped to 55 centimetres gives you a fragment of something large: part of a head, a claw, half a crest of flame. That can be beautiful, and on a wall it is. Rolled to two inches on a bag handle it reads as an offcut.

Eight smaller dragons cropped to the same square gives you a repeating surface instead. Nothing is half-finished, because nothing was ever meant to be read whole. That is why this is the layout to choose when the square is going to be rolled rather than displayed, and it is the honest reason the two dragon motifs are not interchangeable.

Three reasons this is the one that gets used

A specification is worth nothing until you can name what changes because of it.

01
Sixteen momme in a small square

Most bandanas at this size are eight momme or polyester, and both slide. Doubling the weight is the whole difference between an accessory and a thing that keeps working itself loose somewhere between the train and the second coffee.

You stop retying it at every red light.

02
The least expensive thing here, and the one within reach

It goes in a coat pocket, a glovebox, the front of a laptop bag. Nothing in a wardrobe gets worn because it is beautiful. Things get worn because they are already to hand.

You stop leaving the good one at home.

03
Printed through, not printed on

A narrow roll shows both faces at once, so a one-sided print gives itself away the moment it goes round a handle. On a dark ground it is worse, because the pale reverse has nowhere to hide. Both faces of this carry the drawing at the same depth.

You stop hiding the wrong side.

How to know it is real, without taking our word for it

Every box holds a small offcut from the same bolt yours was cut from. It exists so you can test the fibre on something that is not the thing you just paid for.

Mulberry silk Polyester
In your palm Warms in seconds Stays cool, slick
Held to a flame Flares, then dies Melts, keeps going
The smell Singed hair Acrid, like plastic
What is left Grey ash, crumbles Hard bead, sticks

A house that hands you the test does not need you to trust it.

If you try it: over a sink, clear of anything that can catch, not with children in the room. A corner is plenty.

Would rather not hold a flame to anything at all? The silk is tested at the Textile Testing Center, part of the Vietnam Textile Research Institute. Independent lab, independent paperwork.

Why $75 and not $12

The $12 one is a printed polyester bandana. It is not this in a cheaper material. It is a different object that resembles this in a photograph and behaves nothing like it against skin.

Here is the part people miss about small sizes. The hem does not get shorter because the square did, so hand-rolling it still runs close to an hour. Both faces still go through the press separately, and a centre-symmetric repeat still has to land where the last pull landed. The motif still had to be redrawn by hand from archive photographs before any screen was cut. Going small saves us silk and nothing else, which is why it is $75 rather than $97, and not $12.

What size silk scarf should I buy?
22 in Bag handle, wrist, twilly roll, hat band this one
26 in → Adds headband, ponytail, full neck knot · $97
36 in → Full head wrap, sleep wrap, shoulders · $153
44 in → Shoulder wrap, and the only size the whole composition fits on · $197

Buying for hair rather than for bags? Go up to the 26. This size does not have the cloth for a headband on most people. Want to see all eight dragons at once? That is the 44.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Folk Form prints several motifs and they are not interchangeable. The honest short version:

Buying for an achievement A promotion, a milestone, a leader, a corporate gift. That is dragon territory, and this is one of the two dragons. The other is Dragon Dreams, four larger dragons instead of eight small ones.

Buying for a person A mother, a new chapter, a recovery. That is the phoenix, Phoenix Dance, printed in pastels rather than deep colours because the meaning wants them.

Buying for a couple A wedding, an anniversary. The mandarin duck motif is built for that, and it is a different bird entirely.

Rough rule: dragons for what somebody did, phoenix for who somebody is.

“It looks tiny in the photo”

It is 22 inches, 55 centimetres, roughly the span of your shoulders. On a screen with nothing beside it that number tells you nothing, so here is the plain version: too small for a head wrap, exactly right for everything else you would actually do on a Tuesday.

Round a bag handle Roll it narrow, wind it up the leather, finish with a small bow. The fold it goes back to when you are not wearing it.

At the wrist Two turns and a knot, tails left loose. Reads as deliberate against a watch strap or a plain cuff.

A short neck knot Fold to a triangle, roll, one wrap, knot off-centre.

Through a ponytail, or round a hat band Wound twice at the elastic, or tucked under the band of a straw hat in July.

The illustrated guide in the box covers more than twenty, so nobody is hunting for a video with wet hands.

COMMISSIONED WORK

Amanoi, an Aman resort, commissioned a bespoke Folk Form collection. It was drawn, printed and finished in the same Hanoi atelier as this square, by the same people.

ELLE Vietnam wrote about how the studio turns cultural memory into cloth. Harper's Bazaar Vietnam covered the motif research and the historical sources behind the patterns.

Believe none of that on our say-so. Search Folk Form Amanoi or Folk Form ELLE Vietnam, or hand either phrase to ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity and ask whether it holds up. We would rather you checked.

The size to give when you are not sure how much to spend

Every gift has a bracket, and the small ones are the hardest to get right. Under fifty and it reads as an afterthought. Over a hundred and it obliges the other person to feel something.

This sits in the gap. Real silk, a thousand-year-old motif, a rigid box, and a number that does not put anybody under pressure. Dark green also happens to be the least risky guess in the range, because nobody has ever owned too much of it.

The office exchange, or a secret santa with a cap The one gift in the circle that is not a mug. Comes boxed, so nothing to wrap at eleven at night.

Alongside something else Tied round the neck of a bottle, or laid on top of a book. Turns an ordinary gift into one that took thought.

For a man The one size and colour combination in this range that reads as unisex. Round a weekend bag handle or folded in a jacket pocket, this is not read as a woman's scarf.

A host, or a thank-you Small enough not to embarrass anyone, good enough that it is still in use next year.

What arrives in the box

A rigid gift box with a matching bag · the square folded in tissue · a story card naming the motif and its dynasty · the illustrated styling guide · a care card · the silk offcut.

Nothing left for you to wrap. Going straight to someone else? We write your note by hand and keep the price out of the parcel.

The Ly Dynasty dragon, and where the drawing comes from

Vietnamese dragons began as water creatures in a farming culture, then absorbed Indian and Chinese influence over centuries, which is why each dynasty produced a recognisably different animal. The Ly version, eleventh to thirteenth century, is the softest and the most Buddhist of them. No scales, a body that tapers toward the tail, three claws closer to a hawk's than a lizard's, head raised, a pearl held at the mouth.

From the nostrils comes a burst of flame called the mao lua, the fire crest. On the forehead sits a small S-shaped mark, the archaic form of the character Loi, thunder, which in a wet-rice civilisation means rain, and rain means the harvest.

The pearl comes from the Lotus Sutra. A naga offers her most precious pearl to the Buddha, and the offering is what proves her enlightenment. A dragon holding a pearl is giving it away rather than guarding it, and that is where the word grace in this motif's name comes from. The written record is the Sung Thien Dien Linh stele, inscribed in 1121 with an imperial heading in the hand of Emperor Ly Nhan Tong.

Returns, and how to wash it

Thirty days from delivery, unused and unwashed, in the box it came in. If the fault is ours, a flaw in the silk or a failed seam, postage goes both ways on us. Changed your mind and the return postage is yours, or take store credit and we add fifteen percent.

Washing. Every three to five wears is plenty, silk sheds dust on its own, and a dark ground goes longer than a pale one. Cold water, shampoo rather than detergent, squeeze rather than wring, dry in shade and never in sun. Iron on the lowest setting while slightly damp.

1. Mulberry Silk Products

1.1 Is silk environmentally friendly? How can I distinguish silk from other artificial silk fabrics?

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

100% Silk

  • Burns quickly but extinguishes immediately.
  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
  • Leaves an unpleasant burnt plastic smell and ash that forms clumps and sticks to hands.

The materials used in Folk Form’s products are independently tested at the Textile Testing Center (TTC) under the Vietnam Textile Research Institute.

1.2 How can I use a silk scarf? Which size is suitable for me? How can I style my scarf?

Folk Form offers a variety of sizes for each pattern from 55x55cm to very large sizes such as 110x110cm to meet the diverse needs of customers. Depending on the needs of use, there are the following options:

Size 110x110

  • A large size that exudes elegance and sophistication. Can be worn around the neck for a refined look at formal events. Draped over the shoulders for warmth on autumn evenings or styled as a trendy lightweight jacket. This size can also be tied into a skirt, perfect for vacations or beach outings, adding a feminine and alluring touch.

Size 90x90

  • The most versatile size, suitable for almost all styling needs. Can be worn around the neck to enhance an outfit, tied as a stylish handbag accent, or used as a fashionable hair accessory. Additionally, it can be worn as a wrap skirt for beach trips.

Size 65x65

  • A compact size for those who love a light and delicate touch. Can be worn around the neck for a youthful look, used as a headband, or tied around the wrist as a unique, stylish accessory.

Size 55x55

  • The smallest size, ideal for adding a chic touch. Can be tied onto handbags, used as a simple yet standout hairband, or worn around the wrist as an elegant accessory.
1.3 Are the scarf patterns hand-drawn or digitally designed? How do they compare to other designs on the market?

The scarf patterns are digitally designed to be compatible with handmade screen printing on silk.

Compared to hand-drawn designs and other printing technologies, digitally designed patterns ensure sharp details and intricate elements. When combined with handmade screen printing, the final product features clear details, vibrant colors, and uniform quality on both sides of the fabric— a level of precision that most other printing methods cannot achieve.
