At this size the layout finally matters

On a small square nobody notices how a motif is arranged. Thirty-six inches is where it starts to decide what you see, because a head wrap folds the cloth four or five times and every fold hides something.

Dragon Dreams puts large dragons at the corners, turning toward a bodhi leaf at the center. Wrapped, the corners disappear into the tuck and the center lands somewhere on the back of your head. You get a large drawing, mostly hidden.

Dragon of Grace, this one, repeats the same animal smaller in center symmetry. No corner is special and no center is special, so whatever ends up facing outward carries the same amount of work. Wrapped, it reads as a worked surface from every angle.

That is the practical reason this motif suits the two large sizes better than the small ones, and the practical reason a head wrap is where it earns its price.

Sleeping in it, which is the whole case for this size

Thirty-six inches is the size that works for long hair, thick hair and tight coils. Fine or short hair can manage with less. Spare cloth at two in the morning costs you nothing. Running short does.

Why the larger square is $153

What you are buying is area: from 26 inches to 36 each side grows by about a third and the cloth almost doubles, 676 square inches becoming 1,296.

A 36-inch square carries 360 centimeters of edge, each turned, rolled and stitched by hand, against 260 on the 26-inch. Center symmetry adds its own care, with every pull landing exactly on the last across a larger surface.

Set it beside a satin bonnet, a polyester head wrap and a neck scarf bought one at a time: this single square of silk does all three. Worn weekly it comes to under sixty cents a wear over five years, and a hair wrap tends to be worn far more often than that.

“Isn't 36 inches too big for me?”

Folded before it is worn, a large square takes up far less room than its size suggests. Knotted at the neck, it wears much like a 26-inch square, and the extra silk shows as a longer, softer fall.

Size only shows when you want it to. Folded to a band it is a headband. Folded to a triangle it is a neck scarf. Opened out it is a head wrap or a shoulder cover. Nothing forces you to use all of it.

The Ly Dynasty record, and the drawing

Vietnamese dragons began as water creatures of a farming people, and each dynasty drew its own; the Ly dragon of the eleventh to thirteenth century is gentle and flowing, closer to a naga than a beast.

It has no scales, and its body tapers toward the tail, with three sharp claws closer to a hawk's than a lizard's, head raised, a long loose mane and a pearl at the mouth. From the nostrils rises the mao lua, the fire crest, and on the forehead sits the small S-shaped mark of Loi, thunder, which in a wet-rice civilization means rain and a harvest.

The pearl comes from the Lotus Sutra, in which a naga gives her most precious pearl to the Buddha, and that gift is where the word grace in this motif's name comes from. Its record survives on the Sung Thien Dien Linh stele of 1121, whose heading Emperor Ly Nhan Tong wrote in his own hand.

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

Melts rather than burns.
