Summer is when this square comes into its own. Wound high over her hair, turquoise looks clear and fresh in strong light, and it sits easily with white shirts, pale denim and the lighter clothes of the season. It comes out of the drawer in May and stays out until autumn.

A 36-inch square of sixteen momme mulberry silk, hemmed by hand on all four sides and printed by hand in Hanoi with a Ly Dynasty dragon redrawn from eleventh-century stonework. By day it wraps the hair or drapes the shoulders, and at night it becomes a sleep wrap.

What turquoise does at this size

Wrapped, in strong light Cool tones hold their color in sun where deep ones go flat and hot. This is the wrap that still looks right at noon in July.

Over white, linen, cream The pairing that carries a summer. Against white the dragon line reads sharply and the ground looks like water rather than paint.

Denim, in every weight Close enough to blue to belong, far enough to register. The thing navy cannot do against denim.

Against a tan Cool blue-green next to warmed skin is the oldest flattering contrast there is.

Where turquoise does not work: as a gift for an occasion. It reads decorative rather than ceremonial, so for a promotion, a milestone or a corporate gift it undersells what you are actually saying. Red and Dark Green carry the same dragon and carry the occasion with it. Buy turquoise for someone to wear, not for something to mark.

The feel of it

In the hand it is supple and dense, with the soft luster of a protein fiber spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm.

Then there is the way it moves. Sixteen momme gives thirty-six inches of silk a soft, weighted fall, so a wrap sits close at the crown and the ends rest at the nape.

Nearly twice the area of the 26-inch, this square is printed by hand on both faces, screen by screen and one color at a time, and every extra inch means more silk under the squeegee and more hem rolled by hand.

The drawing was made by hand from archive photographs, and every piece is finished in our own atelier in Hanoi and sent straight to you, which is how it arrives at $153. Worn once a week for five years, it comes to under sixty cents a wear.

Take this size if hair is the reason you are here - a full head wrap or a sleep wrap. It folds down and does everything the 26 does, but the 26 cannot come up and do this.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Our motifs are chosen for different moments, and a few lines will point the way:

Buying for an achievement For a promotion, a milestone or a leader, a dragon is the natural choice, and we draw two. This one repeats the Ly Dynasty dragon small in center symmetry, so a wrap shows a dragon at every angle, while Dragon Dreams draws four large dragons at the corners, a picture that reveals itself when opened out.

Buying for a person For a mother, a new chapter or a recovery, the phoenix of Phoenix Dance is the empress's bird to the dragon's emperor, drawn from the peacock and the pheasant and printed in pastels as gentle as its meaning. If the softness of turquoise is what drew you, begin there.

Using it as a sleep wrap

For long, thick or tightly coiled hair, thirty-six inches gives enough silk to wrap, twist and tuck in the dark without a struggle, and enough weight to stay in place until morning. For shorter or finer hair the 26 inch square is plenty.

“Is 36 inches too big for me?”

Folded, it never feels too big. Folded once into a triangle it sits at the neck much like a 26-inch square, and folded twice it becomes a headband, so the full size appears when you choose to open it out.

What you cannot do is go the other way. A 26-inch square will not wrap a head with anything to spare, and it will not survive a night. If either of those is on your list, this is the size, and the extra fifty-six dollars buys you both of them permanently.

Turquoise is a gift for the woman herself, with no occasion needed, and at this size it becomes something she will reach for every day, wound over her hair in the morning or at her neck for dinner.

A dragon from the imperial citadel

Begun in 1010, Hoang Thanh Thang Long is the imperial citadel at the center of Hanoi, and the dragon carved into its stone is gentler than most people expect. Ly Dynasty dragons carry no scales; the body narrows to the tail in a soft wave like water, with three hawk-sharp talons, a raised head and long mane, a pearl at the mouth and a crest of flame at the nose. The S-shaped mark on the forehead is the archaic character for thunder, and thunder brought the rain, the rivers and the harvest.

In the Lotus Sutra the dragon girl gives her pearl away, and the motif's name remembers that generosity: An means grace granted.

May Hoa Long An draws that dragon small and repeats it in symmetry around a center, each one offering a bodhi leaf inward, amid carved borders and a lotus pedestal. Every line was redrawn by hand in our studio from archive photographs, split into screens and printed in Hanoi one color at a time, panel by panel. Washing Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty. Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry in shade, never in sun - mid-tones are where sun fading shows first, and this is a square that will spend time outdoors. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp.

Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:
