This 26-inch square of sixteen momme mulberry silk carries a Ly Dynasty dragon redrawn from eleventh-century stonework and printed by hand in Hanoi. Of all the colorways of this motif, it sits nearest the celadon glaze the Ly potters are remembered for, and it ties in two seconds.

What the photographs cannot hold

Draw it out of the tissue and the cloth speaks before the color, a soft, weighted pour of silk across the palm. It is a protein fiber made by the Bombyx mori silkworm, while polyester is made from oil.

Then comes the way the repeat holds the color. The dragon is drawn small and repeated in symmetry across the whole field, so fine line runs all through the turquoise, and a mid-tone carrying this much drawing reads as precious cloth. Fold it, roll it or knot it off center, and a dragon appears at every angle.

Sixteen momme gives it the body to fall in one piece and rest where she sets it, and once knotted it keeps its shape from the morning commute to the last course of dinner.

Everything here is handwork. The rolled hem takes close to an hour, printing both faces sends the silk through the press twice, and the motif is redrawn from the archive by an artist in our studio. Where the dragon comes from

In the heart of Hanoi lies Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel begun in 1010, and the dragon cut into its stone is calm and kindly. Ly Dynasty dragons carry no scales, and the body tapers in a soft wave like water in motion, with three talons as keen as a hawk's, head raised under a long mane, a pearl at the mouth and a crest of flame from the nose. The S on its forehead is the archaic character for thunder, bringer of rain, rivers and a harvest safely home.

Most precious of all is the pearl. In the Lotus Sutra the dragon girl offers her pearl, and so this dragon is one who gives, which is the meaning of An in its name: grace freely granted.

May Hoa Long An draws that creature small and repeats it in symmetry around a center, each dragon offering a bodhi leaf inward among carved borders and a lotus pedestal. Washing Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty. Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry in shade, never in sun - mid-tones are where sun fading shows first. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp.

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

Melts rather than burns.
