People think silk scarves belong to their mother.
Mostly because they have not seen this one.

The material was never the problem. The palette was. Decades of maroon, forest green and dull gold taught an entire generation that a silk square is something you inherit rather than something you choose, and the category has been paying for it ever since.

Pink and turquoise is the argument against that. Identical silk, identical sixteen momme, the same thousand-year-old dragon, in a palette that belongs to now. A 26-inch square of Vietnamese mulberry silk, printed by hand in Hanoi, both faces to the same depth.

What pink and turquoise actually goes with

White and off-white The cleanest of the four. Turquoise against white is a summer uniform and needs nothing else added to it.

Pale denim Light on light, with the pink doing the work. The everyday version, and the one that leaves the drawer most often.

Navy The grown-up pairing. Pink is what stops navy going severe, and it is the combination that takes this colourway into an office.

Grey The quietest, and where the turquoise earns its place. Against grey it is the only colour in the frame, which is exactly the effect you want from an accessory.

If silver jewellery suits you better than gold, this is your colourway. If it is the other way round, take the green and yellow. One honest limit: against black this is the weakest of the five, because a pale ground next to black loses its own contrast and reads washed out. Black wardrobe, take the red.

Why the scarf your mother had stayed in the drawer

Three things killed it, and none of them was the silk. The palette was chosen for a different decade. It was worn folded flat and pinned at the shoulder, which is a styling from the 1950s. And it was kept for occasions, which means it came out about twice a year and then went away again.

Take those away and what is left is a very good piece of cloth. Worn loose, knotted off-centre and slightly untidy, over a t-shirt rather than a blouse, a silk square reads as completely current. The only thing that ever dated it was the styling and the colour.

That is the whole reason this colourway exists. Same dragon, same eleventh-century drawing, printed in colours nobody's grandmother owned.

Four things it lets you stop doing

A specification is worth nothing until you can say what changes because of it.

01
Sixteen momme, not eight

Light silk slips because there is not enough weight in the cloth for a knot to lock. This has the body to stay exactly where you put it, all day, untouched.

You stop reaching up to check your hair.

02
One square, four accessories

Hair, neck, bag, wrist. No clasp, no ring, no hardware, nothing that only works with one outfit.

You stop buying things you use once.

03
Printed through, not printed on

Pale grounds are where single-sided printing looks cheapest, because the reverse comes up washed out and the difference is visible at arm's length. Both faces here are printed to the same depth.

You stop arranging it and just wear it.

04
Drawn from an archive, not a pattern library

Redrawn by hand from photographs of eleventh-century stone. Not a file an algorithm sold to a thousand brands.

You stop seeing it on somebody else.

How to know it is real, without taking our word for it

Every box contains a cutting from the same bolt your square was cut from. It is there so the test happens on a scrap rather than on the thing you just paid for.

Mulberry silk Polyester
In your palm Warms in seconds Stays cool, slick
Held to a flame Flares, then dies Melts, keeps going
The smell Singed hair Acrid, like plastic
What is left Grey ash, crumbles Hard bead, sticks

Nobody hands you the means to catch them out unless they already know what you will find.

If you try it: over a sink, clear of anything that can catch, not with children in the room. A corner is enough.

Rather not hold a flame to anything? Hold the cutting up to a window instead. Grade describes how even and how clean the reeled filament is, and 5A sits near the top of that scale, which a pale ground shows more plainly than any other. The silk is also tested at the Textile Testing Center, part of the Vietnam Textile Research Institute.

Why $97 and not $18

The $18 one is polyester. It is not a cheaper route to the same object, it is a different object that resembles this in a photograph and behaves nothing like it against skin.

Everything above costs money to do. The hand-rolled hem runs close to an hour. Printing both faces means the cloth goes through the press twice, and two colours means two screens and two alignments. Drawing a motif out of an archive means paying somebody to draw it. We make the whole thing in our own atelier in Hanoi and post it straight to you, which is the only reason the number is $97 rather than several times that.

44 in → Shoulder wrap, sarong, and the only size the whole composition fits on · $197

First one? Take the 26. It is the only square that does hair and neck equally well.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Folk Form prints several motifs and they are not interchangeable. If you arrived here from a search and are not sure this is the right one, the honest short version:

Buying for a person A mother, a new chapter, a recovery, a woman you want to say something to rather than about. That is the phoenix, Phoenix Dance, the empress bird to the dragon's emperor. It is printed entirely in pastels, so if this colourway appeals for its lightness, that whole motif is built the same way and its meaning is about rebirth rather than authority.

Buying for an achievement A promotion, a milestone, a leader, a corporate gift. That is dragon territory, and this is one of the two dragons. The full drawing here places four large dragons at the four corners, all turning toward a bodhi leaf at the centre, so it reads as a picture. Dragon of Grace is the same Ly Dynasty animal drawn smaller and repeated eight times, which reads as a worked surface instead.

Buying for a couple A wedding, an anniversary. The mandarin duck motif is built for that, and it is a different bird entirely.

Rough rule: dragons for what somebody did, phoenix for who somebody is.

“I love these, but I would never know how to tie one”

This is the real reason silk scarves die in drawers, so let us be plain: there is no skill in it. No pins, no rings, nothing to memorise. If you can tie a shoelace you will get all four of these first time, at a mirror, in under a minute.

The neck knot, worn loose Fold to a triangle, roll, wrap once, knot loose and push it off-centre. Deliberately untidy. This is the version that stops it reading vintage.

The headband Fold corner to corner, roll into a band, tie at the nape, tuck the tails. Third-day hair, handled.

The ponytail wrap Wind it twice round the elastic, knot on top, let the ends fall.

The bag roll Roll it narrow, wind it up the handle, small bow. On a plain canvas or white leather bag this colourway is the whole point of the bag.

More than twenty in the illustrated guide, which is in the box, so nobody is hunting for a video with wet hands.

If you sleep on it, or have curls to protect

Cotton pillowcases pull moisture out of hair and drag on the cuticle all night. That friction is where frizz comes from, and why a wash-day curl pattern is gone by Tuesday.

Silk does neither. It absorbs far less, so the oil stays in the hair, and the surface is smooth enough that hair slides across it instead of catching. Curls keep their shape. A blowout runs an extra day or two. Colour holds longer because there is less abrasion lifting the cuticle.

This 26-inch square works as a sleep wrap for shorter or finer hair. If yours is long, thick or tightly coiled, take the 36 inch, there is simply more cloth to work with at two in the morning. A pale ground also shows hair oil sooner than a dark one, so if it is slept in nightly expect to wash it twice a week, where the navy would go a fortnight.

COMMISSIONED WORK

Amanoi, an Aman resort, commissioned a bespoke Folk Form collection. Every piece in it was drawn, printed and finished by the atelier that makes this square, by the same hands.

ELLE Vietnam profiled the studio's approach to translating cultural memory into silk. Harper's Bazaar Vietnam covered the motif research and how each pattern is built from historical sources.

Do not take our word for any of it. Search Folk Form Amanoi or Folk Form ELLE Vietnam, or put either phrase to ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity and ask whether it checks out. We would rather you looked than believed us.

Buying this as a gift?

This is the colourway for someone younger than the category expects. It does not read as a present chosen for a woman of a certain age, which is exactly the trap most silk gifts fall into.

It also lasts in a way a gift is not usually allowed to. This hangs in a wardrobe for a decade, and every time she reaches past it she thinks of you. That is not sentiment, it is how objects work. What you own gains weight the longer you keep it, while money spent is forgotten by Friday.

And it hands her something to say. When somebody compliments it she does not answer thank you. She answers: it is a Ly Dynasty dragon, my daughter found it.

For a daughter, a sister, a friend in her twenties Light, current, and it works with the clothes she already owns rather than asking her to build an outfit around it.

For a graduation, or a first serious job One small good thing that makes a new chapter feel like hers, without looking like something borrowed from an older wardrobe.

For a spring or summer birthday The colours are warm-weather colours. This is the square that gets packed for a holiday rather than saved for a season.

For a bride, or a bridesmaid Pale, photographs beautifully, and it is the something-blue that gets worn again for years afterwards. If it is for the honeymoon rather than the day, the 44-inch ties as a sarong.

What arrives in the box

A rigid gift box and matching bag · the square folded in tissue · a story card naming the motif and its dynasty · an illustrated styling guide · a care card · the silk cutting.

Nothing left for you to wrap. Sending it straight to her? We write your note by hand and keep the price out of the parcel.

Ten ways one square earns its place

If the thought is I would never actually wear it, or buying for someone and thinking it for her, this is the part to read. A square this size does not have one job.

At this size: headband, ponytail wrap, neck knot, bag handle, wrist wrap, belt through jeans, twilly roll, a band round a hat, tied to a suitcase handle so you spot your bag first, and framed on a wall the rest of the time. Go up to 36 inches and you add the full head wrap, the turban and the sleep wrap.

That last one is not a joke. It is a hand screen print on silk.

The dragon, and where it actually comes from

Hoang Thanh Thang Long is the imperial citadel at the centre of Hanoi, begun in 1010. The dragon cut into its stonework is not the fierce kind people expect. Ly Dynasty dragons curve in a soft sine like moving water, head raised, a pearl held at the mouth, a flame crest lifting behind. Not menace. Rain. Rivers. A harvest that comes in.

Bodhi leaves and lotus sit around it. Our studio redraws every motif by hand from archive photographs, then splits it into screens. One colour, one pass, panel by panel, printed in Hanoi.

The drawing is a thousand years old. The colours are not, and that is deliberate. A motif only survives by being put on things people actually want to wear.

“Is this too much for someone like me?”

Of the five colourways this is the least likely to provoke that question, and the reason is contrast. Pink and turquoise sit close together in tone, so the square reads as one soft colour from across a room rather than as a pattern demanding attention. Knotted small at the neck over a t-shirt it is barely a statement at all.

Returns and exchanges

Thirty days from delivery. Unused, unwashed, in the original box.

If the fault is ours, a flaw in the silk, a print error, a seam that has failed, postage goes both ways on us and you get a replacement or a full refund.

Changed your mind? Thirty days, return postage yours. Take store credit instead of a refund and we add fifteen percent.

One condition, the same one every silk house applies: anything worn against hair or skin comes back clean.

How to wash silk without ruining it

Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty.

Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring or twist. Dry in shade, never in sun. Pale grounds show a mark sooner than dark ones, so keep perfume and sunscreen off it until both have dried. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp.

A thousand-year-old dragon.
In colours nobody's grandmother owned.

Sixteen momme, printed through both faces, hemmed by hand in Hanoi. It arrives gift boxed with a cutting you are welcome to hold up to a window, or set on fire.

A precious gem symbolizing an ancient culture, where tradition and modern creativity converge to create a refined and meaningful beauty.

  • Inspiration Behind The Dragon Dreams

Inspired by thousand-year history of Thăng Long Citadel, "Dragon Dreams" is recreated from the original artifacts such as dragon of Ly Dynasty, the curved rooflines with Xi Van - the Roof guardian of imperial architecture, Bodhi leaves from the flourishing Buddhist era and the iconic lotus pedestal of the 11th-14th centuries… recreating a mystical realm between reality and dream, past and present, where sacred dragons unite on the scarves of our time.

  • The Essence of The Dragon Dreams

"Dragon Dreams" print on silk scarves recreates the Ly Dynasty Dragon in a spiral composition converging toward the Lotus Throne. The border features pairs of Xi Van, ancient roof guardians protecting against fire, enclosing a mystical sky of swirling clouds, bodhi leaves, and lotus flowers. With graceful lines and harmonious colors, these scarves breathe new life into heritage, honoring Vietnamese culture on its journey to the world.

1. Mulberry Silk Products

1.1 Is silk environmentally friendly? How can I distinguish silk from other artificial silk fabrics?

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

100% Silk

  • Burns quickly but extinguishes immediately.
  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
  • Leaves an unpleasant burnt plastic smell and ash that forms clumps and sticks to hands.

The materials used in Folk Form’s products are independently tested at the Textile Testing Center (TTC) under the Vietnam Textile Research Institute.

1.2 How can I use a silk scarf? Which size is suitable for me? How can I style my scarf?

Folk Form offers a variety of sizes for each pattern from 55x55cm to very large sizes such as 110x110cm to meet the diverse needs of customers. Depending on the needs of use, there are the following options:

Size 110x110

  • A large size that exudes elegance and sophistication. Can be worn around the neck for a refined look at formal events. Draped over the shoulders for warmth on autumn evenings or styled as a trendy lightweight jacket. This size can also be tied into a skirt, perfect for vacations or beach outings, adding a feminine and alluring touch.

Size 90x90

  • The most versatile size, suitable for almost all styling needs. Can be worn around the neck to enhance an outfit, tied as a stylish handbag accent, or used as a fashionable hair accessory. Additionally, it can be worn as a wrap skirt for beach trips.

Size 65x65

  • A compact size for those who love a light and delicate touch. Can be worn around the neck for a youthful look, used as a headband, or tied around the wrist as a unique, stylish accessory.

Size 55x55

  • The smallest size, ideal for adding a chic touch. Can be tied onto handbags, used as a simple yet standout hairband, or worn around the wrist as an elegant accessory.
1.3 Are the scarf patterns hand-drawn or digitally designed? How do they compare to other designs on the market?

The scarf patterns are digitally designed to be compatible with handmade screen printing on silk.

Compared to hand-drawn designs and other printing technologies, digitally designed patterns ensure sharp details and intricate elements. When combined with handmade screen printing, the final product features clear details, vibrant colors, and uniform quality on both sides of the fabric— a level of precision that most other printing methods cannot achieve.
