Twenty-six inches of mulberry silk in deep purple, sixteen momme, printed by hand with a Ly and Tran Dynasty phoenix drawn from temple carving in northern Vietnam. It ties in seconds and keeps its grace from morning to the last course of dinner.

The company deep purple keeps

Black and charcoal Where it belongs. Of our three phoenix colors, purple holds its own against black and never merely floats on top, so this is the phoenix for a wardrobe of dark pieces.

Navy Two deep colors, near enough to look intended and far enough apart to be seen, a pairing that reads as taste.

Camel and cream The pairing for an evening out: a warm ground beneath a jewel-toned square, the print clear across its whole width.

Against dark hair Purple melts into dark hair as depth, so tied as a headband it becomes part of the whole look of the day.

If softness is what drew you here, know that this is the most formal of our three phoenix colors, closer to evening than to morning; for the gentleness of the motif, Pink or Green carries it beautifully.

What a photograph cannot show

Lift it from the tissue and the cloth speaks before the color does: silk is a protein spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm, where polyester is drawn from oil.

Then the color begins to move. By daylight this purple leans toward blue, and under a warm lamp it turns to plum, because the pigment sits halfway between red and blue; the same square is one thing at breakfast and another at dinner, and no single photograph can hold both.

And it stays where she places it. Sixteen momme falls in one piece, so a knot holds from the morning commute through a meeting and on to dinner, untouched.

Purple sits halfway between red and blue, which makes it a demanding color to hold steady. The smallest drift in ink pulls one panel toward mauve and the next toward violet, and on a folded square those panels meet side by side, so this one is held to a single even purple across every panel.

In every box lies a cutting from the bolt her square was cut from, so the test is made on that small piece and the scarf itself stays untouched.

The craft behind $97

The $18 square is polyester. It can look similar in a photograph, and in the hand it is another object entirely, with none of this silk's weight or quiet sheen.

Each part of it is handwork. The rolled hem takes close to an hour, and hand screen printing asks for one screen and one pass for every color in the drawing, and this phoenix is richly drawn. Researching the bird from period temple carving and redrawing it is an artist's work, and because we make the whole square in our own atelier in Hanoi and post it straight to you, it comes to $97. Worn weekly for five years, it comes to under forty cents a wear.

First one? Take the 26. It is the only square that does hair and neck equally well. Phoenix Dance is also the one motif we print as a 6 × 106 cm twilly at $57, if you want the pattern at its smallest before committing.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Our motifs are made for different moments, and a few lines will show which one you are looking for.

Buying for a person A mother, a new chapter, a recovery, a woman you want to honor for who she is: this is the one. The phoenix is the empress's bird, partner to the emperor's dragon, and she carries a wish for grace, rebirth and a life made new.

The phoenix and her meaning

Vietnamese temple decoration returns again and again to three motifs. The lotus is Buddhist, speaking of purity and stillness and the seat of the Buddha; the dragon is imperial, a creature of water, rain, rivers and the harvest.

The phoenix is the empress's bird, partner to the emperor's dragon. On the roofs of temples she offers a pearl among clouds, a wish for peace, prosperity and rebirth, and a warmly human meaning for a motif a thousand years old.

Her plumage is said to hold five colors, one for each of the five elements. Ly and Tran carvers drew her soft and flowing, and later dynasties drew her bolder; this is the earlier, gentler line, from the era that raised the One Pillar Pagoda, Phat Tich and Chua Dam.
