The safest color in the room, and still not beige.
That gap is where this one lives.

Most people who want color at the neck end up buying something neutral, because the alternatives all feel like a declaration. Pastel green is the exception. It is soft enough to wear to anything, and specific enough that nobody reads it as playing safe. Over a white shirt it is the whole outfit; over gray it is the only warm thing in the frame.

A 26-inch square of Vietnamese mulberry silk, printed by hand with a Ly and Tran Dynasty phoenix redrawn from temple carving in northern Vietnam. Sixteen momme. Two seconds to tie, and it works on your behalf for the rest of the day.

What pastel green actually goes with

A white shirt The pairing this color was made for. Green against white reads as fresh rather than as an effort, and it is the combination that survives a meeting, a lunch and a school pickup without changing meaning.

Gray and charcoal Gray flattens most colors. This one it warms. A pastel green knot is the fastest way to stop a gray outfit reading as unfinished.

Denim, any weight Green sits opposite blue on the wheel, so the contrast is built in and needs no thought.

Cream, camel, ivory Where it looks most expensive. Warm ground, cool print, and the gold in the phoenix line doing the work between them.

Where pastel green does not work: on a very warm complexion in cold light, where it can pull sallow at the jaw. It is a mirror test and it takes ten seconds. If it goes wrong, Pink is the same bird in the color that gives warmth back to a face instead of taking it.

Same size, other colorways: Pink · Purple

★★★★★

It is not slippery or flimsy like some others I have tried. It stays in place and feels great on my skin even in warm weather.

The part no photograph gets across

Take it out of the tissue and the first thing that registers is not the color, it is the temperature. Cool for about four seconds, then it matches your hand exactly and stays there. Nothing made from oil does that.

The second is how much is going on inside a color this quiet. A pastel ground gives a printer nowhere to hide: there is no darkness to lose a mistake in, so every line of the phoenix, every cloud edge and every misregistered hair would be visible from arm's length. That is why pale grounds are the ones cheap printing avoids, and why this one is worth looking at closely rather than from across a room.

The third is that it stays where you put it. Sixteen momme has enough weight to fall in one piece rather than drift, so a knot holds through a commute, a meeting and dinner without a single adjustment.

Three things it lets you stop doing

A specification is worth nothing until you can say what changes because of it.

01
Sixteen momme, not eight

Light silk slips because there is not enough weight in the cloth for a knot to lock. This has the body to stay exactly where you put it, all day, untouched.

You stop reaching up to check your hair.

02
One square, four accessories

Hair, neck, bag, wrist. No clasp, no ring, no hardware, nothing that only works with one outfit.

You stop buying things you use once.

03
A pale ground printed through

On a pastel there is no dark to hide behind. Registration has to be exact, the ink has to sit evenly, and both faces have to match or the fold at the throat gives it away instantly. This is the hardest kind of ground to print well and the easiest to judge.

You stop needing to take our word for the quality.

How to know it is real, without taking our word for it

Every box contains a cutting from the same bolt your square was cut from. It is there so the test happens on a scrap rather than on the thing you just paid for.

Mulberry silk Polyester
In your palm Warms in seconds Stays cool, slick
Held to a flame Flares, then dies Melts, keeps going
The smell Singed hair Acrid, like plastic
What is left Gray ash, crumbles Hard bead, sticks

If you try it: over a sink, clear of anything that can catch, not with children in the room. A corner is enough.

Rather not hold a flame to anything? The silk is tested at the Textile Testing Center, part of the Vietnam Textile Research Institute. Outside lab, outside paperwork.

Why $97 and not $18

The $18 one is polyester. It is not a cheaper route to the same object, it is a different object that resembles this in a photograph and behaves nothing like it against skin.

Everything above costs money to do. The hand-rolled hem runs close to an hour. Hand screen printing means one screen and one pass for every color in the drawing, and this motif is not a simple one. Researching a bird off period temple carving and redrawing it means paying somebody to do that. We make the whole thing in our own atelier in Hanoi and post it straight to you, and that is the only reason the number is $97 rather than several times it. Worn weekly it costs under forty cents a wear over five years.

What size silk scarf should I buy?
22"
26"
36"
44"
22 in → Bag handle, wrist, narrow twilly roll · $75
26 in Headband, ponytail, neck knot this one
36 in → Full head wrap, sleep wrap, all the 26 does · $153
44 in → Shoulder wrap, and the only size the whole composition fits on · $197

First one? Take the 26. It is the only square that does hair and neck equally well. Phoenix Dance is also the one motif we print as a 6 × 106 cm twilly at $37, if you want the pattern at its smallest before committing.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Folk Form prints several motifs and they are not interchangeable. If you arrived here from a search and are not sure this is the right one, the honest short version:

Buying for a person A mother, a new chapter, a recovery, a woman you want to say something to rather than about. That is this one. The phoenix is the empress bird, the counterpart to the emperor's dragon, and of the three motifs that recur in Vietnamese temple decoration it is the only one that carries no religious weight — it simply signals that things are well. It is printed in pastels rather than deep colors because that meaning wants them.

Buying for an achievement A promotion, a milestone, a leader, a corporate gift. That is dragon territory, and there are two. Dragon Dreams puts four large dragons at the corners so it reads as a picture. Dragon of Grace draws the same animal small and repeats it in center symmetry, so it reads as a worked surface. Both run in deep colors, because that meaning wants those.

Buying for a couple A wedding, an anniversary. The mandarin duck motif is built for that, and it is a different bird entirely.

Rough rule: dragons for what somebody did, phoenix for who somebody is.

“I love these, but I would never know how to tie one”

This is the real reason silk scarves die in drawers, so let us be plain: there is no skill in it. No pins, no rings, nothing to memorize. If you can tie a shoelace you will get all four of these first time, at a mirror, in under a minute.

The headband Fold corner to corner, roll into a band, tie at the nape, tuck the tails. Third-day hair, handled.

The ponytail wrap Wind it twice around the elastic, knot on top, let the ends fall.

The neck knot Fold to a triangle, roll, wrap once, knot loose and slide it off-center. Over a white shirt this is the entire outfit.

The bag roll Roll it narrow, wind it up the handle, small bow. Where it lives on the days you do not wear it.

More than twenty in the illustrated guide, which is in the box, so nobody is hunting for a video with wet hands.

If you sleep on it, or have curls to protect

Cotton pillowcases pull moisture out of hair and drag on the cuticle all night. That friction is where frizz comes from, and why a wash-day curl pattern is gone by Tuesday.

Silk does neither. It absorbs far less, so the oil stays in the hair, and the surface is smooth enough that hair slides across it instead of catching. Curls keep their shape. A blowout runs an extra day or two. Color holds longer because there is less abrasion lifting the cuticle.

This 26-inch square works as a sleep wrap for shorter or finer hair. If yours is long, thick or tightly coiled, take the 36 inch — there is simply more cloth to work with at two in the morning.

COMMISSIONED WORK

Amanoi, an Aman resort, commissioned a bespoke Folk Form collection. Every piece in it was drawn, printed and finished by the atelier that makes this square, by the same hands.

ELLE Vietnam profiled the studio's approach to translating cultural memory into silk. Harper's Bazaar Vietnam covered the motif research and how each pattern is built from historical sources.

Do not take our word for any of it. Search Folk Form Amanoi or Folk Form ELLE Vietnam, or put either phrase to ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity and ask whether it checks out. We would rather you looked than believed us.

Buying this as a gift?

This is the motif to choose when the gift is about who somebody is rather than what they have done. Of the motifs that recur in Vietnamese temple decoration, the phoenix is the one that never carried a religious meaning: it was carved to say that the country was at peace and that there was beauty worth noticing. That is a narrower and far more useful thing to give somebody than a symbol of achievement.

It also hands her something to say. When somebody compliments it she does not answer thank you. She answers: it is a Ly Dynasty phoenix, and the phoenix is the one that never meant anything religious — it only ever meant that things were going well.

For your mother Twenty years of being told not to spend money on her is precisely why it lands. Something she would never buy herself, already boxed, from a country she will want to ask you about. Green is the one of the three she is least likely to already own.

For a graduation, or a first serious job The phoenix reads as a beginning rather than a trophy, which is the correct register for somebody who has not started yet.

For a woman you work for, or with Pastel green is the safest of the three at an office. It says thank you without saying anything that would be awkward to explain.

For a new mother Soft, washable, needs no size, and useful on days when getting dressed is not happening. If she is more pink than green, Pink is the same bird.

★★★★★

The craftsmanship is top notch and the design feels timeless. Already eyeing another one.

The phoenix, and what it actually means

Three motifs recur in Vietnamese temple decoration, and they do not mean the same thing. The lotus is Buddhist: purity, stillness, the seat of the Buddha. The dragon is imperial and belongs to water — rain, rivers, a harvest that comes in.

The phoenix is the one that carries no religious weight at all. It was carved on beam ends, stair flanks and roof corners for a single reason: to say that the country was at peace and prosperous, and that there was beauty worth noticing. That is a narrower meaning than most people expect from a thousand-year-old motif, and a more human one. It asks nothing of whoever wears it.

She is drawn holding a pearl and moving through cloud. In the source the plumage carries five colors, one for each of the five elements. Ly dynasty drawing is soft and flowing; by the Tran the same bird is drawn sturdier and more decisive. This is the earlier version, the softer one — the same period that built the One Pillar Pagoda, Phat Tich and Chua Dam.

Our studio redraws every motif by hand from archive photographs, then splits it into screens. Hand screen printing means one screen and one pass for every color, panel by panel, in Hanoi. Not a file an algorithm sold to a thousand brands, which is the part nobody can copy and the part she gets to explain when somebody asks.

The box, the care, and the returns

In the box A rigid gift box and matching bag · the square folded in tissue · a story card naming the motif and its dynasty · an illustrated styling guide · a care card · the silk cutting. Nothing left for you to wrap. Sending it straight to her? We write your note by hand and keep the price out of the parcel.

Washing Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty. Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry in shade, never in sun — pale grounds are where sun fading and marks show first, so keep this one out of direct light and away from perfume sprayed after it is on. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp.

Returns Thirty days from delivery, unused and unwashed, in the original box. If the fault is ours, a flaw in the silk, a print error, a seam that failed, postage goes both ways on us and you get a replacement or a full refund. Changed your mind? Thirty days, return postage yours, and if you take store credit instead of a refund we add fifteen percent. One condition, the same one every silk house applies: anything worn against hair or skin comes back clean.

  • Inspiration Behind The Phoenix Dances

With a deep passion for cultural heritage, the "Phoenix Dance" print is inspired by ancient artifacts: the sculpted Phoenix on Bodhi leaves, cloud patterns from imperial attire and engraved lotus flowers on ancient ceramics. Along with archives, inscriptions, and historical records, Folk Form strives to vividly recreate a celestial scene where the Phoenix soars and dances amidst the clouds as a way to honor traditional artistry while embracing contemporary creativity.

  • The Essence of The Phoenix Dances

The Phoenix motif unfolds with wide-spread wings, gracefully curved, layered feathers, interwoven with cloud patterns and Bodhi leaves, creating a harmonious, balanced composition. Bordering this celestial scene is a flowing lotus motif, interlaced with lime flower chain and a ribbon of color. The palette of the scarves blends warm and refreshing tones, from pastel pink to mystical purple, evoking a sense of antiquity, elegance, vibrancy and modern sophistication.

1. Mulberry Silk Products

1.1 Is silk environmentally friendly? How can I distinguish silk from other artificial silk fabrics?

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

100% Silk

  • Burns quickly but extinguishes immediately.
  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
  • Leaves an unpleasant burnt plastic smell and ash that forms clumps and sticks to hands.

The materials used in Folk Form’s products are independently tested at the Textile Testing Center (TTC) under the Vietnam Textile Research Institute.

1.2 How can I use a silk scarf? Which size is suitable for me? How can I style my scarf?

Folk Form offers a variety of sizes for each pattern from 55x55cm to very large sizes such as 110x110cm to meet the diverse needs of customers. Depending on the needs of use, there are the following options:

Size 110x110

  • A large size that exudes elegance and sophistication. Can be worn around the neck for a refined look at formal events. Draped over the shoulders for warmth on autumn evenings or styled as a trendy lightweight jacket. This size can also be tied into a skirt, perfect for vacations or beach outings, adding a feminine and alluring touch.

Size 90x90

  • The most versatile size, suitable for almost all styling needs. Can be worn around the neck to enhance an outfit, tied as a stylish handbag accent, or used as a fashionable hair accessory. Additionally, it can be worn as a wrap skirt for beach trips.

Size 65x65

  • A compact size for those who love a light and delicate touch. Can be worn around the neck for a youthful look, used as a headband, or tied around the wrist as a unique, stylish accessory.

Size 55x55

  • The smallest size, ideal for adding a chic touch. Can be tied onto handbags, used as a simple yet standout hairband, or worn around the wrist as an elegant accessory.
1.3 Are the scarf patterns hand-drawn or digitally designed? How do they compare to other designs on the market?

The scarf patterns are digitally designed to be compatible with handmade screen printing on silk.

Compared to hand-drawn designs and other printing technologies, digitally designed patterns ensure sharp details and intricate elements. When combined with handmade screen printing, the final product features clear details, vibrant colors, and uniform quality on both sides of the fabric— a level of precision that most other printing methods cannot achieve.
