Pastel green is the rare soft color with a point of view: gentle enough to wear anywhere, and distinct enough that no one mistakes it for playing safe. Knotted over a white shirt or tied back as a silk head scarf, it finishes the outfit; against gray, it becomes the warm note in the room.

This is a 26-inch square of mulberry silk at sixteen momme, printed by hand with a Ly and Tran Dynasty phoenix taken from temple carving in northern Vietnam. A moment to tie, and it carries her gracefully through the day.

The detail a screen cannot show

Out of the tissue, the silk announces itself before its color does: a protein fiber spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm, where polyester starts as oil.

Then look closer, because a color this quiet holds a great deal. A pastel ground hides nothing, so every line of the phoenix and every cloud edge shows at arm's length, and this square rewards a close look as much as a glance across the room.

And it keeps its place. At sixteen momme the cloth falls in one piece and never drifts, so a knot rests from the school run through the working day and into the evening.

Where $97 goes

The $18 version is polyester: in a photograph it can pass for this, and in the hand it has none of the weight or soft sheen of silk.

All of it is handwork. The hem is rolled by hand over close to an hour, and hand screen printing takes one screen and one pass for each color in a richly drawn phoenix. The bird was researched from period temple carving and redrawn by an artist, and because we make the square in our own atelier in Hanoi and post it straight to you, it comes to $97. Worn every week for five years, that is under forty cents a wear.

First one? Take the 26. It is the only square that does hair and neck equally well. Phoenix Dance is also the one motif we print as a 6 × 106 cm twilly at $57, if you want the pattern at its smallest before committing.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Every motif of ours answers a different moment; a few lines will guide you.

Buying for a person A mother, a new chapter, a recovery, a woman you long to celebrate for who she is: this is the one. The phoenix, the empress's bird beside the emperor's dragon, carries a wish for grace, rebirth and new beginnings, and her gentle meaning is why we print her in pastels.

The phoenix and all she carries

In Vietnamese temple decoration three motifs return again and again, and each speaks differently. The lotus is Buddhist, all purity and stillness, the seat of the Buddha; the dragon is imperial and belongs to water, to rain, rivers and a harvest safely in.

The phoenix is the empress's bird, partner to the emperor's dragon, and the pair stand for harmony. Carved on beam ends, stair flanks and roof corners, she was a wish for peace and prosperity, for grace and for rebirth, a meaning more intimate than people expect from a motif a thousand years old.

She is drawn with a pearl, moving through clouds of five colors, her plumage said to hold the five elements. Under the Ly and Tran she is drawn soft and flowing, and later dynasties drew her more boldly; ours is the earlier, gentler bird, from the age of the One Pillar Pagoda, Phat Tich and Chua Dam.

Washing Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty. Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry in shade, never in sun - pale grounds are where sun fading and marks show first, so keep this one out of direct light and away from perfume sprayed after it is on. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp.
