Hair spends much of its life in between: growing out a fringe or a color, weeks past an appointment, or resting in a protective style. Thirty-six inches of pale green silk wraps it all in moments, and it looks like a choice, never a cover.

What pastel green does at this size

Wrapped, with a plain white shirt The combination that carries the whole trick. Green against white reads as fresh rather than as an effort, and it is the one that survives a school run, a meeting and a supermarket without changing meaning.

Over gray and charcoal Gray flattens most colors. This one it warms. Wrapped, it is the only warm thing in the frame and the outfit stops looking unfinished.

With denim Green sits opposite blue on the wheel, so the contrast is built in and needs no thought at seven in the morning.

Against blonde and light brown hair Where it does the most. Cool green next to warm hair is a contrast that reads deliberate, which is exactly what you want when the hair underneath is the part you would rather not discuss.

Where pastel green does not work: on a very warm complexion in cold light, where it can pull sallow at the jaw. It is a mirror test and it takes ten seconds - and worth doing at this size, because a wrap puts the color right up against the whole face rather than below it. If it goes wrong, Pink is the same bird in the color that gives warmth back to a face instead of taking it.

The bird was redrawn by hand from period temple carving, and each square is finished in our own atelier in Hanoi and shipped straight to you at $153. Worn weekly for five years, it costs less than sixty cents a wear, and hair wraps are seldom kept to once a week.

If hair is the reason you are here, this is the size. Thirty-six inches is the smallest square that covers a head completely with enough left to tuck. The 26 is a headband, not a wrap.

Which motif should I be looking at?

What our motifs mean, in brief:

Buying for a person For a mother, a new chapter or a recovery, the phoenix is right: the empress's bird, a carved emblem of peace and prosperity, printed in pastels that suit its tenderness.

Buying for an achievement A promotion or a leader calls for a dragon, four large at the corners in Dragon Dreams or one small and repeated in Dragon of Grace, both in deeper colors.

Where the phoenix comes from

In the carving of Vietnamese temples, the lotus stands for purity and stillness, and the dragon for water and the harvest.

The phoenix carries a softer message: set on beam ends, stair flanks and roof corners, she told everyone who passed that the land was at peace and prosperous.

She moves through cloud with a pearl, her plumage in five colors for the five elements, and her line is the fluid one of the Ly and Tran, the period of the One Pillar Pagoda, Phat Tich and Chua Dam.

Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:
