Fifty-five centimeters of mulberry silk in pastel green, sixteen momme, hand printed with a phoenix of the Ly and Tran Dynasty, redrawn from temple carving in northern Vietnam. It rides happily in a bag and emerges looking every bit as refined as it went in.

Where pale green belongs

The wrist Where the discovery happens. Wrapped twice and knotted between a watch and a sleeve, it lets her live with a pale color for a few days and see how much she enjoys it.

What the hand discovers

Unfold it and the cloth makes itself known before the color: silk is a protein, spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm, while polyester is made from oil.

Then its weight. A small square is expected to feel like a handkerchief, and this one has real presence: sixteen momme at 22 inches, enough for a knot on a bag handle to hold from check-in to the final gate.

And a pale ground keeps no secrets. With no darkness to hide a slip, every line and every cloud edge shows at arm's length, where a wrist scarf is admired, so this is the size at which the printing is seen most closely.

The same craft, at 22 inches

A small square carries the same craft as a large one, and proportionally more edge: the hem is rolled and stitched by hand, and even at this size that runs close to an hour.

Both faces are printed, so the cloth passes through the press twice. The phoenix was researched from period temple carving and redrawn by an artist, and that drawing costs the same whether it lands on a 22-inch square or a 44. We make the whole square in our own atelier in Hanoi and post it straight to you, which is how it comes to $75.

There is one step below this: Phoenix Dance is the only motif we print as a 6 × 106 cm twilly, at $57. It is a ribbon rather than a square - it ties to a bag or a ponytail and does nothing else. This size is the smallest one that still behaves like a scarf.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Each motif we make belongs to its own occasion; these few lines will point you to the right one.

Buying for a person A mother, a new chapter, a recovery, a woman you wish to celebrate for herself: this is her motif. The phoenix is the empress's bird, partner to the emperor's dragon, carrying a wish for grace and rebirth, and we print her in pastels because that gentle meaning suits them.

What the phoenix means

Three motifs appear again and again in Vietnamese temple carving, each with a meaning of its own. The lotus is Buddhist, a flower of purity and stillness that forms the seat of the Buddha; the dragon is imperial and lives in water, bringing rain, rivers and the harvest.

The phoenix is the empress's bird and the dragon's partner, and together the two stand for harmony and balance. Carved on beam ends, stair flanks and roof corners, she carries wishes for peace and prosperity, for grace and rebirth, a tender meaning for a motif a thousand years old.

She holds a pearl and moves through clouds, her plumage said to carry five colors for the five elements. The Ly and Tran line that draws her is soft and flowing, and later dynasties made her bolder; this is the earlier, gentler phoenix, of the same era as the One Pillar Pagoda, Phat Tich and Chua Dam.
