What the silk says up close

Lifted from its tissue, the cloth speaks before the color: mulberry silk is a protein fiber from the Bombyx mori silkworm, and polyester is made from oil.

This is also the size admired most closely. Across a table a wrist scarf sits about two feet from the eye, nearer than any other size, so the hem, the edge of the print and the fold where the two faces meet are all on view, and each one is finished to be seen.

And a small square carries more cloth than people expect: sixteen momme at 22 inches has a lovely presence, and that weight keeps a knot in place through a day of sleeves going up and down.

Small square, the same devotion

A small square asks for all the same craft, and it has proportionally more edge than a large one: the hem is rolled and stitched by hand, still close to an hour of work at this size.

Both faces carry the print, so the cloth goes through the press twice. Redrawing the phoenix from period temple carving is an artist's work, and it costs the same whether the drawing lands on a 22-inch square or a 44; because we make the whole square in our own atelier in Hanoi and post it straight to you, it comes to $75.

There is one step below this: Phoenix Dance is the only motif we print as a 6 × 106 cm twilly, at $57. It is a ribbon rather than a square - it ties to a bag or a ponytail and does nothing else. This size is the smallest one that still behaves like a scarf.

The phoenix, and her story

Three motifs appear throughout Vietnamese temple decoration, and each has its own voice. The lotus is Buddhist, purity and stillness and the seat of the Buddha, and the dragon is imperial, a creature of water bringing rain, rivers and a good harvest.

The phoenix is the empress's bird, partner to the emperor's dragon, the two together a picture of harmony. Carved on beam ends, stair flanks and roof corners, she holds wishes for peace, prosperity, grace and renewal, an intimate meaning for a motif so many centuries old.

She carries a pearl as she moves through cloud, and her plumage is said to hold five colors, one for each element. Ly and Tran artists drew her soft and flowing, and later dynasties gave her a bolder line; this is the earlier and gentler phoenix, from the period of the One Pillar Pagoda, Phat Tich and Chua Dam.

Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:
