What pale pink does at this size

Over a dark dress, at an event The reason to own it. Pale over dark is the oldest formula in evening dressing, and pink is the version of it that puts warmth back into a face under the worst lighting a venue can offer.

Over navy or charcoal, by day Pink against dark tailoring is the oldest trick there is. At a meter across it stops the outfit reading as severe without softening it into nothing.

Over cream, camel, ivory Tonal rather than contrasting, and the combination that photographs as expensive rather than as coordinated.

The silk itself

Lifted from its tissue, the silk feels alive in the hand, a protein fiber spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm, and in pale pink its sheen is like the inside of a shell.

It weighs more in the hand than it seems to on the body, since sixteen momme spreads across both shoulders, so it stays on from the ceremony through the speeches.

Pink changes with the light, and in person this one is deeper and dustier than any screen shows, closer to the inside of a shell than to candy, and lovely in photographs at an event.

A meter of cloth spends most of its life folded, and lighter silk takes a crease and keeps it - which means an iron and a board before you can leave the house. Sixteen momme has the body to let a fold fall out on its own, so hang it for an hour, or wear it and let the folds relax.

You stop packing an iron, or hunting for one in a hotel.

A cutting to keep

The box also holds a cutting of the same silk, so any test can be made on that small piece and never on the shawl.

Inside a $197 shawl

At nearly three times the area of the 26-inch, with 440 centimeters of hand-rolled hem against 260, it is printed by hand through both faces, one color at a time, and a pale ground leaves no room for a misaligned screen.

The phoenix was studied in period temple carving and redrawn by hand, and each piece is made in our own Hanoi atelier and sent straight to you at $197. Worn twice a month for five years, it comes to about $1.64 a wear, and this is the size worn to the days people photograph.

If there is an event in the diary, this is the size. Nothing smaller reads as a wrap over the shoulders, and a wrap is what the occasion is asking for. This is also the only size that carries the composition entire - everything smaller is a cut from the same drawing.

Washing Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty. Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring - and with a meter of cloth, lift it out supported rather than letting the weight of the water pull on one corner. Dry flat in shade, never in sun: pale grounds are where fading and marks show first. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp.

Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:
