What deep purple does at this size

Over a black dress Where it earns the money. Black on black reads as one dark mass; purple over black separates into two deliberate layers, which is the whole difference between dressed and covered up.

Over navy Two deep colors close enough to look intentional and far enough apart to register. This combination reads as taste rather than as an accident of what was clean.

Over camel, cream, ivory The contrast that carries a room. Warm ground, cool wrap, and the drawing legible across the whole meter.

With silver, and against dark hair Cool tones sit closer to silver than to gold, and purple sinks into dark hair as depth rather than sitting on it as a separate object.

Where deep purple does not work: when the meaning is the point. From the tissue, the cloth announces itself before the color: silk is protein, spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm, and it has the soft, living luster of one.

A meter of sixteen momme silk has weight in the hand and almost none on the body, because it rests across both shoulders; it is the wrap that stays on through a long evening.

Pale silk shows a coffee ring, a foundation mark at the inner fold and rain spots. All of it comes out in cold water, and all of it you notice first. A deep ground shows none of them. On a piece this size that is not a small thing, because it decides whether the wrap gets worn to actual events or kept in tissue for the one that never comes.

Nearly three times the area of the 26-inch, it carries 440 centimeters of hand-rolled hem against 260, and both faces are printed, screen by screen and one color at a time, a deep ground asking for full, even ink across the whole meter.

The phoenix was researched from period temple carving and redrawn by hand, and every piece is made in our own atelier in Hanoi and sent straight to you for $197. Beside an evening jacket it is a modest price, and it folds into a clutch and belongs to every season.

Three motifs recur in Vietnamese temple decoration, each with its own meaning: the lotus, a flower of purity and stillness, and the dragon of water, bringing rain, full rivers and a harvest.

The phoenix is the empress's bird, carved on beam ends, stair flanks and roof corners as a sign that the land was at peace and prosperous, and that there was beauty worth noticing. It is a gentle, human meaning, and it asks nothing of the woman who wears it.

Drawn from the peacock and the pheasant, she carries a pearl through the clouds, her plumage in five colors for the five elements. The line is graceful and fluid, as it was drawn under the Ly and Tran, the age of the One Pillar Pagoda, Phat Tich and Chua Dam.

Washing Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty. Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring - and with a meter of cloth, lift it out supported rather than letting the weight of the water pull on one corner. Dry flat in shade, never in sun: purple is a pigment that shifts under direct light. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp.
