What deep purple does at this size

Wrapped, over dark hair The case for this colorway over the other two. It reads as continuous with the hair rather than as a covering placed on it, which is why it survives being worn to work.

Over black and charcoal Purple is the only one of the three that holds its own against black instead of floating on top of it. This is the phoenix for a wardrobe that is mostly dark.

Over camel and cream The contrast that carries an evening. Warm ground, cool wrap, and the print reading clearly across the whole of it.

With silver rather than gold Cool tones sit closer to silver, so it stacks with the jewelry most people already wear rather than fighting it.

Where deep purple does not work: if softness is what brought you here. This is the least phoenix-looking of the three - it reads formal, closer to evening than to morning, and at 36 inches there is a lot of it. If what you actually wanted was the gentleness of the motif, Pink or Green deliver it and this one does not.

Before the color, you notice the cloth: silk is protein, spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm, and it feels soft, dense and quietly alive.

The phoenix was redrawn by hand from period temple carving, and each piece is made in our Hanoi atelier and sent directly to you at $153. Over five years of weekly wear, that is under sixty cents each time, and a wrap for the hair is usually worn more often still.

If hair is the reason you are here, this is the size. Thirty-six inches is the smallest square that covers a head completely with enough left to tuck. The 26 is a headband, not a wrap.

Which motif should I be looking at?

A brief guide to what each motif means:

Buying for a person For a mother, a new chapter or a recovery, the phoenix is the motif: the empress's bird beside the emperor's dragon, a carved sign of peace and prosperity on old temple roofs.

Buying for an achievement For a promotion or a leader, give a dragon, large at the corners of Dragon Dreams or small and repeated in Dragon of Grace; both share the deep colors of this purple.

Buying for a couple For a wedding or an anniversary we print a different bird, the mandarin duck, always drawn as a pair.

Using it as a sleep wrap

Long, thick or tightly coiled hair can be wrapped fully for the night in thirty-six inches, with weight enough to stay in place; for shorter or finer hair, the 26 inch square is enough, and our guide to which size to choose compares every size.

Size. Thirty-six inches is the one. It covers a head completely with enough left to tie and tuck, and it does not need a second piece underneath. The 26-inch does not.

Vietnamese temples repeat three great motifs: the lotus of purity and stillness, the dragon of water and harvests, and the phoenix.

Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:
