Anybody can print the word silk on a label. Very few will hand you a match.

If you do it: over a sink, clear of anything that can catch, not with children in the room. A corner is enough. It is a home check, not lab proof.

From $97 to $153: what changes

Area is what you are buying, and it grows quickly: 26 inches to 36 is about a third more on each side and almost twice the cloth, 676 square inches becoming 1,296.

The hem grows with it, twelve feet of edge turned, rolled and stitched by hand against roughly eight and a half feet on the 26-inch, the most patient part of the whole process. Both faces still go through the press separately, and the motif was redrawn from archive photographs before a single screen was cut.

Weigh it against the satin bonnet, the polyester head wrap and the neck scarf you might otherwise buy one by one; this single square of silk does all three, and does them beautifully.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Each Folk Form motif has a meaning of its own, and the right one depends on the person and the day. In brief:

Buying for an achievement A promotion, a milestone, a leader, a corporate gift: for these, choose one of our two dragons. This drawing sets four large dragons at the four corners, turning in toward the center, so it reads as a picture, while Dragon of Grace repeats the same Ly Dynasty dragon eight times, drawn small in center symmetry, as a finely worked surface. Wrapped over the hair, the denser drawing shows from every angle, and this one reveals its picture a fold at a time.

Buying for a person A mother, someone beginning again, someone you want to honor: that is Phoenix Dance, the phoenix, the empress's bird to the dragon's emperor, printed in pastels because its meaning is a gentle one.

Buying for a couple A wedding or an anniversary belongs to the mandarin ducks, two birds under one lotus, a motif made for two people.

The shortest way to choose: the dragon honors an achievement, and the phoenix honors the woman herself.

“Isn’t 36 inches too big for me?”

This size always raises the question, and the reassuring answer is that a large square is folded down before it is worn. Tied at the neck, it takes up about as much room as a 26-inch square, and the extra cloth shows as a richer fall at the ends.

Size only shows when you want it to. Folded to a band it is a headband. Folded to a triangle it is a neck scarf. Opened out it is a head wrap or a shoulder cover. Nothing forces you to use all of it.

The river dragon of the citadel

Hanoi's imperial citadel, Hoang Thanh Thang Long, was begun in 1010, and its stone dragons are creatures of rivers and rain. They move in a long slow curve, head raised, a pearl at the mouth and a crest of flame running behind.

Rain, water and a harvest that comes in: the reading is a wish for a good year, with bodhi leaves and lotus gathered around the drawing. At this size most of the composition opens across the wrap, and our note on what the Dragon Dreams motif means tells the rest.

How to wash silk without ruining it

Less often than people assume. Silk sheds dust by itself, so every three to five wears is plenty.

Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring or twist. Dry in shade, never in sun. Iron on the lowest silk setting while it is still faintly damp. Dark grounds hold their depth for years treated this way.
