What $153 buys over the 26-inch

The extra is area: each side grows by about a third, from 26 inches to 36, and the cloth nearly doubles, from 676 square inches to 1,296.

The hem grows too, since a 36-inch square carries 360 centimeters of edge turned, rolled and stitched by hand, against 260 on the 26-inch, and that careful work lengthens with every inch. Both faces still go through the press separately, and the motif was redrawn from archive photographs before any screen was cut.

Set against a satin bonnet, a polyester head wrap and a neck scarf bought one by one, this is a single square of silk that does all three. Worn weekly it comes to under sixty cents a wear over five years, and a wrap for hair is often worn most days of the week.

“Isn't 36 inches too big for me?”

It is the question every generous square is asked, and the reassuring answer is no, since a large square is folded down before it is worn. At the neck it sits close to the size of a 26-inch square, with more body in the fall of the ends.

Size only shows when you want it to. Folded to a band it is a headband. Folded to a triangle it is a neck scarf. Opened out it is a head wrap or a shoulder cover. Nothing forces you to use all of it.

The imperial citadel of Hanoi, Hoang Thanh Thang Long, was begun in 1010, and the dragon in its stone is a gentle river creature, curving slowly with its head raised, a pearl at its mouth and a crest of flame running behind.
