A 44-inch square, 110 centimeters, of mulberry silk in pink and turquoise, hand screen-printed with a Ly Dynasty dragon drawn from eleventh-century stonework in Hanoi. At sixteen momme it drapes with a gentle weight instead of floating away.

A pale ground shows the cloth

On a dark scarf the eye goes to the print; on a pale one it rests on the silk itself, the evenness of the weave and the clean, soft surface of the cloth. A light ground asks the silk to be beautiful on its own, and this one is.

The thread behind it is Grade 5A, a grade of raw silk set by tests on how even and clean the thread is and how consistent its thickness is. On a pale ground that evenness reads as one continuous, luminous surface.

The story behind $197

Set beside a 26-inch square, this is almost three times the cloth, 1,936 square inches against 676, and close to double the hem, nearly fifteen feet turned twice by hand. The hours of handwork follow the edge and the area, and at this size both are generous.

Think of the resort cover-up and the evening wrap you might otherwise buy separately, a viscose kaftan and a pashmina. This is one piece doing both, in silk, and it packs to almost nothing.

This is the only size that ties as a sarong. If the reason for buying is a trip rather than a wardrobe, there is no other answer.

“Won’t something this pale get marked?”

More visibly than a dark one, yes. Pretending otherwise would be dishonest, so here is what actually happens and what to do about it.

Water-based marks, which is most of them, come out in a cold wash with shampoo. Silk releases them readily because the fiber does not hold much water in the first place. Oil is the harder case: sunscreen and perfume are the two that cause real trouble, and both do it by going on wet and being sat on.

The fix is one habit. Put sunscreen and perfume on first, let them dry, then put the silk on. That single order of operations prevents almost every problem people report with pale silk.

And if something does go wrong in the first thirty days, it comes back to us. The returns terms are below and they are not conditional on the reason.

Where this dragon was carved

In 1010 work began on Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel at the heart of Hanoi, and its carved dragons are water creatures, curving long and unhurried, head lifted, a pearl held at the mouth and a crest of flame behind.

Their meaning is rain, rivers and a harvest that arrives, a wish for a good year, and bodhi leaves and lotus drift through the composition; at 110 centimeters you see every part of it. The story is told more fully in our guide to what this dragon motif means.

The drawing is a thousand years old and the colors belong to today, chosen so that a motif this old is worn and loved again.

How to wash silk without ruining it

Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring or twist. Dry flat in shade, never in sun. Iron on the lowest silk setting while faintly damp.

Two things specific to a pale ground worn near water. Rinse it in fresh water the same day if it has been in the sea or a pool, because chlorine and salt left to dry are harder on silk than the wash itself. And keep sunscreen off it until the sunscreen has dried.

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
