Picture the lid lifting on an autumn evening: the tissue parts, and a silk shawl of green and gold falls open across her hands, heavier and softer than any photograph suggests. Laid over a cream coat or a black dress, the gold catches the lamplight each time she turns, and the whole drawing moves with her in one slow, weighted fall.

A 44-inch square, 110 centimeters, of mulberry silk in green and yellow, hand screen-printed with a Ly Dynasty dragon drawn from eleventh-century stonework in Hanoi. At this size the full composition opens across the cloth, dragons, bodhi leaves and lotus all uncropped, so she wears the drawing exactly as it was composed.

What green and gold is lovely with

Inside a camel or cream coat Worn open down the front so the gold sits at the lapel, it carries a winter coat from October to March and makes the plainest coat look chosen.

Black, in the evening Gold against black is softer than white against black and far less severe, an evening wrap with the depth of old lacquer that never competes with her jewelry.

A dark green or olive coat Tone on tone, the greens settle into one another and the gold carries the light, a pairing that looks quietly deliberate.

Two colors, two screens, one clean line

Each color is pulled through its own screen by hand, one pass at a time, and every screen has to land exactly where the last one did. Where green meets gold the line stays crisp, with no pale outline and no doubled edge, so the drawing reads cleanly at arm's length and closer still.

Over 110 centimeters, with the whole composition on the cloth, every alignment is on show. It is done by eye and by hand, panel by panel, and you can see that care in the way the gold follows each curve of the dragon.

Then the edge: close to fifteen feet of hem on a square this size, turned twice and closed with a needle. Run it between finger and thumb and you feel a fine, soft cord, the detail anyone who knows silk will look for.

This is the only size where the whole drawing fits on the cloth. If the motif is the reason you are here rather than the color, take this one.

“Is this too decorative to actually wear?”

A fair question, and the fold decides the answer. Opened across the shoulders, the whole composition shows and it reads as a printed textile; folded once on the diagonal and thrown, perhaps a third of it shows, mostly green and gold ground with the drawing breaking across the fall.

That second version is how it gets worn on ordinary days, and it reads as warm color rather than as pattern. The first version is for when you want it to be the thing people look at.

The dragon, and the citadel it comes from

Construction of Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel at the heart of Hanoi, began in 1010. The dragon carved into its stone moves like water, in a long and unhurried curve, head lifted, a pearl held at the mouth and a crest of flame rising behind.

Its meaning belongs to the fields: rain, rivers and a harvest that comes in, a wish for a good year. Bodhi leaves and lotus drift through the composition, and at 110 centimeters four dragons turn in toward the center with nothing cropped away. The green recalls celadon glaze, one of the signature colors of Ly Dynasty craft, and the gold lifts it the way lamplight lifts old lacquer on a temple carving.

How to wash silk without ruining it

Rarely. A wrap worn over clothes rather than against skin barely needs washing at all, and silk sheds dust on its own. Once a season is normal for a piece this size.

Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent, squeeze rather than wring, dry flat in shade and never in sun, because sun dulls a yellow before it touches anything else. Iron on the lowest silk setting while faintly damp. If you keep it framed, hang it out of direct light for the same reason.

Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:
