Picture the whole family at the table for her birthday: she lays a silk shawl of deep red over a black dress, the sheen catching the candlelight as she leans in to laugh, the drawing opening across her back. A red square has no cut and no hem length to date it, so she will wear it to every celebration that follows.

A 44-inch square, 110 centimeters, of mulberry silk in deep red, hand screen-printed with a Ly Dynasty dragon drawn from eleventh-century stonework in Hanoi. It is our largest square, and the whole composition sits open on the cloth.

Worth knowing: folded at the neck, red is an accent, and opened across the shoulders, it becomes the outfit itself. If that second picture is the one you want, this is the piece; if not, the navy is the gentler choice.

An even red from corner to corner

Over a hand's width, a slight shift in a printed ground goes unseen; over 110 centimeters, every tone is on show, and a warm, saturated red makes each shift easy to read.

Here the ink sits at the same depth from corner to corner, pulled by hand in one movement, and then the whole cloth goes through again so the reverse matches the face. The result is a single, even red with no gradient across the ground and no seam where two passes met.

Then the edge, close to fifteen feet of it, turned twice and closed with a needle, the most patient work in the atelier and the detail a lover of silk will look for as the box opens.

Behind the $197

Compared with a 26-inch square, this is almost three times the cloth, 1,936 square inches against 676, and close to double the hem. The handwork grows with the edge and the area together, and at this size there is a great deal of both.

Weighed against the evening wrap you might otherwise choose, a viscose pashmina or a wool stole, this is silk printed by hand, carrying a dragon a thousand years old.

It is made in our own atelier in Hanoi and posted directly to you, with no importer, department store or third margin between us, which keeps a piece with this much handwork under two hundred dollars.

In red, the two sizes that make sense are the 26 and this one. The 26 keeps it an accent. This one lets it be the whole thing when you want it to be.

“Would I actually wear something this red?”

It depends on how you wear it, and both answers are lovely.

Folded on the diagonal and thrown over a coat, this is an accent. The visible surface is a band across the shoulders and two points at the front, against whatever you already had on. Nobody in that room is thinking about the scarf, they are thinking that you look finished.

Opened out over a black dress in the evening, it is the outfit. That is a deliberate choice and it should be made deliberately. Doing both, on different nights, is the whole argument for a square rather than a garment.

If neither picture sounds like you, the navy at this size offers the same silk in a quieter voice.

Ways to wear it, day into night

Wear it open across both shoulders as a shawl, throw it on the diagonal with the points at the front, or knot it at one shoulder as a one-sided drape. Tied at the waist it is a sarong over a swimsuit, wrapped high it is an obi belt over a plain black dress, twisted it becomes a halter or bandeau, and wound, a full turban with cloth to spare.

It also folds down to nothing. A 44-inch square packs smaller than a paperback and weighs less than a phone, which is why it ends up in a carry-on rather than a drawer.

The dragon of the imperial citadel

Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel at the heart of Hanoi, was begun in 1010, and the dragon in its stone is a gentle one, traveling in a long, unhurried curve like water, head lifted, a pearl held at the mouth and a crest of flame behind.

The meaning is rain, rivers and a harvest that arrives, a wish for a good year that feels right in red. Bodhi leaves and lotus drift through the drawing, and at 110 centimeters it opens in full; our guide explains what this dragon motif means.

How to wash silk without ruining it

Rarely. A wrap worn over clothes rather than against skin barely needs washing at all, and silk sheds dust on its own. Once a season is normal for a piece this size.

Reds want two courtesies. Wash it alone the first time, and keep it out of direct sun when drying, because sun is what takes the depth out of a red faster than anything else. Cold water, shampoo rather than laundry detergent, squeeze rather than wring, dry flat in shade. Iron on the lowest silk setting while faintly damp.

Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
