Ninety centimeters of mulberry silk, hand screen-printed with a Ly Dynasty dragon from eleventh-century stonework in Hanoi, it holds a full wrap without a single pin, and it is chosen with such delight that it never waits in a drawer.

Where a red square this size actually goes

Wrapped full, with black The strongest combination available to anyone. Black gives red the whole frame and asks for nothing back, and the face sits between the two.

As a turban, with white or cream The summer version, and the lighter one. Against cream the red loses about half its volume without losing any of its intent.

Folded down to a wide band For days when hair should be off the face but the full wrap is more than you want. Same square, a third of the presence.

Overnight A deep ground does not show the mark hair oil leaves, so a red sleep wrap goes as long between washes as a navy one. The pale colorways do not.

Buying this for somebody else? Only send red if you know she likes being looked at. If you are not sure, the navy at this size does the identical job and asks nothing of her.

Anybody can print the word silk on a label. Very few will hand you a match.

If you do it: over a sink, clear of anything that can catch, not with children in the room. A corner is enough. It is a home check, not lab proof.

The silk is tested at the Textile Testing Center, part of the Vietnam Textile Research Institute, an independent body, not our own lab.

Why the 36-inch is $153

The price follows the area: going from 26 inches to 36 lengthens each side by about a third and almost doubles the cloth, from 676 square inches to 1,296.

Twelve feet of edge are turned, rolled and stitched by hand on this square, against roughly eight and a half feet on the 26-inch, and each extra inch is more of a needle's patient work. The two faces go through the press separately, and the motif was redrawn from archive photographs long before the screens were cut.

Measured against a satin bonnet, a polyester head wrap and a neck scarf bought separately, this single square of silk does the work of all three with far more grace.

“Could I really carry off a red head wrap?”

Two easy choices decide it: the fold, and what you wear with it.

The first is the fold. Wrapped full at the hairline it is unambiguous. Folded down to a band across the front, with hair loose behind, it is a fraction of the same color and reads as an accessory. Doing both is the point, and the second is the easier place to start.

The second is what else you have on. Red at the head over a printed dress is a fight. Red at the head over black, white, gray or denim is a single decision in an otherwise plain outfit, which is what people mean when they say someone has style.

The dragon behind the red

In the stone of Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel begun in Hanoi in 1010, the dragon moves the way a river bends, long and slow, head raised, a pearl at the mouth and a crest of flame streaming behind.

Rain, water and a harvest that comes in were its meaning, a wish for a good year, and bodhi leaves and lotus gather around it. At ninety centimeters a generous part of the drawing shows on the wrap, and our note on what this dragon motif means has the fuller story.

The dragon was redrawn by hand in our studio from archive photographs, then given a screen for each color, and the red was pulled through by hand.

How to wash silk without ruining it

Less often than people assume. Silk sheds dust by itself, so every three to five wears is plenty.

Wash it alone the first time. Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry in shade and never in sun, because sun takes the depth out of a red faster than anything else will. Iron on the lowest silk setting while it is still faintly damp.

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.

The materials used in Folk Form’s products are independently tested at the Textile Testing Center (TTC) under the Vietnam Textile Research Institute.
