Where deep purple feels at home

What the silk reveals

In the hand, the cloth makes its impression before the color: silk is a protein spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm, where polyester begins as oil.

Purple also changes with the room, leaning blue in daylight and plum under a warm lamp, so the square has one mood at breakfast and another at dinner, a play of color no photograph can hold.

And a small square has more presence than you expect: sixteen momme at 22 inches, enough weight for a knot to stay put through a day of sleeves going up and down.

All the craft, in a small square

Hand-rolling the hem of even this small square takes close to an hour, since a small square carries proportionally more edge than a large one.

Both faces are printed, sending the cloth through the press twice, and a deep ground asks for more ink and more care. The phoenix is redrawn from period temple carving at the same cost for a 22-inch square as for a 44, and because we make the whole square in our own atelier in Hanoi and send it straight to you, it comes to $75.

There is one step below this: Phoenix Dance is the only motif we print as a 6 × 106 cm twilly, at $57. It is a ribbon rather than a square - it ties to a bag or a ponytail and does nothing else. This size is the smallest one that still behaves like a scarf.

Getting it there in time

Each motif we print carries its own meaning, and if you arrived from a search, a few lines will help.

Buying for a person A mother, a new chapter, a recovery, a woman you want to celebrate for herself: this is the one. The phoenix is the empress's bird, the dragon's partner, a symbol of grace, rebirth and a life renewed.

Buying for an achievement A promotion, a milestone, a leader, a corporate gift belong to the dragons: Dragon Dreams places four large dragons at the corners like a picture, and Dragon of Grace repeats one small creature in center symmetry, lovely when rolled at this size. Three motifs recur in Vietnamese temple decoration, each with its own meaning. The lotus is Buddhist, purity and stillness and the seat of the Buddha, and the dragon is imperial and belongs to water, rain, rivers and a harvest that comes in.

The phoenix is the empress's bird, partner to the emperor's dragon, and together they stand for harmony and balance. Carved in temple decoration, she carries wishes for prosperity, grace and rebirth, a warm and human meaning for a thousand-year-old motif.

She moves through clouds of five colors, her plumage said to hold the five elements, and the Ly and Tran line that draws her is soft and flowing, as graceful as the era itself.
