At a gallery opening on a winter evening, she draws a silk shawl of deep green around her shoulders, and the fine gold linework catches the light as she moves between the rooms. From across the room it reads as rich, quiet color; step closer and eight dragons appear, each offering a leaf toward the center.

A hundred and ten centimeters of mulberry silk in dark green, hand screen-printed in Hanoi with May Hoa Long An, Cloud-Painted Dragon Grace: one Ly Dynasty dragon, printed eight times in center symmetry, each lifting a bodhi leaf and a lotus. It is our largest square, generous enough to cover both shoulders at once.

Deep green, beautifully paired

From across a room this is a deep green shawl with a worked surface, the way a fine tweed reads as color before it reads as weave; everyone can tell there is something beautiful on it before they can say what.

Come closer and the eight dragons resolve, head raised, mane loose, three claws, a pearl held at the mouth and a burst of flame at the nose, with bodhi leaves and lotus between them.

That gap is the charm of this colorway at this size: a textile at a distance and a drawing up close, so it suits a quiet morning and a grand evening alike.

The details of the dragon

Ly Dynasty dragons have no scales; the body tapers toward the tail in a long, unhurried curve, the way water moves, and the three claws are sharp, closer to a hawk's than a lizard's.

On the forehead sits a small S-shaped mark, the archaic character Loi, thunder: in a wet-rice civilization thunder means rain, and rain means the harvest. From the nostrils rises the mao lua, the fire crest, a sign of vitality.

The pearl comes from the Lotus Sutra, where a naga offers her most precious pearl to the Buddha, and the offering proves her enlightenment. These dragons are giving their pearls away, which is where the word grace in the motif's name comes from, and at 110 centimeters you can see all eight of them doing it.

A large square needs weight to fall well, and at sixteen momme this one settles across her back and stays there through the whole of a long dinner.

Laying a light drawing onto deep green takes real depth of ink, and a shawl is seen from behind as often as from the front, folding back at every drape. Both faces here carry the same fine linework, so every turn of the silk looks finished.

The dragon in the Ly Dynasty record

Vietnamese dragons began as water creatures of a farming culture, and each dynasty drew its own. The Ly version, eleventh to thirteenth century, is soft and flowing, closer to a naga than to a beast.

The written record is unusually rich: the Sung Thien Dien Linh stele, composed by the minister Nguyen Cong Bat and inscribed in 1121 with a heading written by Emperor Ly Nhan Tong himself, describes dragons everywhere at court, on robes, on pavilions and in the architecture. Ceramics, roof tiles and carved stone from the period tell the same story.

How to wash silk without ruining it

Rarely. A wrap worn over clothes rather than against skin barely needs washing at all, and silk sheds dust on its own. Once a season is normal for a piece this size.

When it does: cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent, squeeze rather than wring, dry flat in shade and never in sun. Iron on the lowest silk setting while faintly damp. Dark grounds hold their depth for years treated this way.
