At the Lunar New Year dinner, a silk shawl of imperial yellow falls open over her black dress, and the whole of May Hoa Long An is there to be seen. Eight small dragons circle the center, each offering a bodhi leaf inward, with carved borders and a lotus pedestal filling the field between them. The smaller squares each hold a portion of this arrangement; here it is complete.

Sixteen momme mulberry silk in imperial yellow, hemmed by hand on all four sides and printed by hand in Hanoi from a Ly Dynasty dragon redrawn out of eleventh-century stonework. It covers both shoulders and still folds small enough for a handbag.

Silk is protein, spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm, and you feel it the moment the square leaves its tissue: a dense, supple cloth with a quiet luster.

The weight comes next. At sixteen momme, forty-four inches of silk has a real presence, so it drapes across the shoulders and stays there through dinner and the long goodbye at the door.

Before you decide, a word on how our motifs differ:

The dragon of Thang Long

Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel at the heart of Hanoi, was begun in 1010, and its stonework holds a dragon far gentler than legend suggests. It has no scales. Its body narrows toward the tail like moving water, with three talons as sharp as a hawk's, a raised head and flowing mane, a pearl held at the mouth and a crest of flame rising from the nose. The small S on its forehead is the old character for thunder, the herald of rain, full rivers and a good harvest.

Its pearl tells the story of the name. In the Lotus Sutra the dragon girl offers her pearl freely, and An, in May Hoa Long An, means grace granted.

The motif draws that dragon small and places it eight times around a center, each offering a bodhi leaf inward, with carved borders and a lotus pedestal in the field between. We redrew it by hand in our studio from archive photographs, divided it into screens and printed it in Hanoi, one color and one pass at a time. Washing Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty. Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry flat in shade, never in sun, and never hang a wet square this size or the weight of the water pulls the hem. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp.

If the fault is ours, a flaw in the silk, a print error, a seam that failed, postage goes both ways on us and you get a replacement or a full refund. Changed your mind? Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

100% Silk

Burns quickly but extinguishes immediately.
Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

Melts rather than burns.
Leaves an unpleasant burnt plastic smell and ash that forms clumps and sticks to hands.

The materials used in Folk Form’s products are independently tested at the Textile Testing Center (TTC) under the Vietnam Textile Research Institute.

When combined with handmade screen printing, the final product features clear details, vibrant colors, and uniform quality on both sides of the fabric— a level of precision that most other printing methods cannot achieve.
