What goes into $97

The $18 one is polyester: close in a photograph, and a world away once it is lifted, lacking the weight and soft luster of mulberry silk.

All of it is handwork. The rolled hem takes close to an hour, printing both faces sends the silk through the press twice, and a center-symmetric repeat asks every pull to land where the last one did, a tolerance at its tightest on a pale ground. Redrawing the motif from the archive is an artist's work in our studio.

The neck knot A triangle, rolled and wrapped once, then knotted loosely off center: over navy or a white shirt it finishes the outfit, and it is where this colorway feels most at home.

The headband Fold it corner to corner, roll it into a band, knot it at the nape and tuck the tails away, a band of sunlight above the brow.

Ten roles for one square

Wondering whether it would ever leave the drawer? A square this size lives many lives, and here are ten of them.

At this size: headband, ponytail wrap, neck knot, bag handle, wrist wrap, belt through jeans, twilly roll, a band round a hat, tied to a suitcase handle so you spot your bag first, and framed on a wall the rest of the time. Go up to 36 inches and you add the full head wrap, the turban and the sleep wrap.

That last one is not a joke. It is a hand screen print on silk.

Where this Ly Dynasty dragon comes from

Vietnamese dragons began as water creatures of a farming people and took on Indian and Chinese influences over the centuries, so each dynasty drew its own. The Ly dragon, from the eleventh to the thirteenth century, is the softest and most Buddhist of them all, with no scales, a body tapering toward the tail, three claws closer to a hawk's than a lizard's, a raised head and a pearl held at the mouth.

From the nostrils rises a burst of flame called the mao lua, the fire crest, and on the forehead sits a small S-shaped mark, the archaic form of Loi, thunder, which in a land of wet-rice fields means rain and a good harvest. On a yellow ground both details can be seen at arm's length.

The pearl comes from the Lotus Sutra, where a naga offers her most precious pearl to the Buddha, and a dragon holding a pearl is giving it away, which is the grace in this motif's name. The Sung Thien Dien Linh stele, inscribed in 1121 beneath a heading in the hand of Emperor Ly Nhan Tong, keeps the written record, and our guide to what the Dragon of Grace motif means gathers the whole story.

How to wash silk without ruining it

Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty.

Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring or twist. Dry in shade, never in sun, and on a yellow this matters more than on any other colorway, because sun takes a warm color first. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp.

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.
