A picture or a pattern: the choice between our dragons

Folk Form draws one Ly Dynasty dragon, redrawn by hand from archive photographs, and arranges it in two ways; the difference between our two dragon motifs lies in how many appear and where they sit.

Dragon Dreams sets four at the corners, all turning toward a bodhi leaf at the center, so on a 65-centimeter square each dragon is large with open ground around it, and it reads as a picture; fold it into a triangle and a dragon lands at the point.

Dragon of Grace, this one, sets eight in center symmetry, each half the size, so the square reads as a rich pattern in which no corner is special and every fold shows some of the drawing.

Folded small, that makes all the difference: a pattern stays a pattern at the neck, quiet and textured, and opens into its full density when the square is laid flat. In dark green, that density is the whole charm.

The dragon itself, and the details to find

Ly Dynasty dragons are unlike the dragons most people imagine. They have no scales, and the body tapers toward the tail in a long, unhurried curve like moving water; there are three sharp claws, a raised head with a long loose mane, and a pearl held at the mouth.

Two details reward a closer look when it arrives. From the nostrils rises a burst of flame the Vietnamese call the mao lua, the fire crest, a sign of vitality; and on the forehead sits a small S-shaped mark, the old form of the character Loi, thunder. In a land of wet-rice fields, thunder means rain and rain means the harvest.

The pearl comes from the Lotus Sutra, in the story of the Dragon Girl who offers her most precious pearl to the Buddha, an offering that shows her enlightenment. A dragon holding a pearl is giving it away, and that generosity is the grace in this motif's name.

Each stage is handwork. Rolling the hem by hand runs close to an hour, and printing both faces sends the cloth through the press twice, while eight repeats in center symmetry mean every pull must land where the last one did. An artist redraws the motif from the archive, and we make the whole square in our own atelier in Hanoi and send it straight to you, which is how it comes to $97.

If you think I would never wear it, or suspect she might, read on: a square this size plays many parts.

The Ly Dynasty record behind the drawing

The Vietnamese dragon began as a river creature of farming communities, and under the Ly Dynasty it was drawn soft and flowing, moving like the naga of Buddhist art.

The Sung Thien Dien Linh stele, composed by the minister Nguyen Cong Bat and carved in 1121 with a heading written by Emperor Ly Nhan Tong himself, describes dragons throughout the court, on robes, on pavilions and in the architecture, and the dragons also appear on the architectural ceramics of the Ly court.

How to wash silk without ruining it

Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty, and a dark ground goes longer than a pale one.

Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring or twist. Dry in shade, never in sun. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp. Dark grounds hold their depth for years treated this way.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:
