What the hand discovers

Lift it from the tissue and the cloth speaks before the color does, a supple, weighted fall that no photograph can hold. Silk is a protein fiber spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm, and polyester, made from oil, has none of its living sheen.

Then the repeat shows what it gives the red. The dragon is drawn small and set again and again in symmetry, so fine line breaks the ground everywhere; fold it, roll it or knot it off center, and pattern still shows at every angle. A single large motif can lose its subject in the folds while this one keeps its drawing, and that is the gentle difference between the two dragons Folk Form prints.

At sixteen momme the silk drapes as one soft piece, and a knot tied before breakfast is still in place when the dessert plates are cleared.

Behind the $97

The $18 one is polyester, which can pass in a photograph and gives itself away the moment it is held, light and flat where this silk is weighted and full of sheen.

Each part of it is made by hand. Rolling the hem takes close to an hour, printing both faces sends the silk through the press twice, and a red ground drinks more pigment with every pass. The dragon is redrawn from the archive by an artist in our studio, and because the square is made in our own atelier in Hanoi and sent directly to you, the price rests at $97. Tied once a week for five years, it costs less than forty cents each time she wears it.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Every motif we print carries its own wish, and choosing one begins with the person you have in mind.

Buying for an achievement A promotion, a milestone, a leader, a corporate gift: a dragon belongs to these moments, and this is one of our two. Here the Ly Dynasty creature is drawn small and repeated in center symmetry, so it reads as a worked surface; Dragon Dreams draws it large, four at the corners turning toward a bodhi leaf, so it reads as a picture. The dragon, and the citadel it comes from

Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel at the heart of Hanoi, was begun in 1010, and the dragon carved into its stone is a gentle creature. Its dragons wear no scales: the body narrows toward the tail in a long, easy wave like a current of water, with three talons sharp as a hawk's, head lifted beneath a flowing mane, a pearl at the mouth and a crest of flame rising from the nose. On its forehead is a small S, the archaic character for thunder, and thunder promises rain for the rivers and a harvest brought safely in.

Above all, notice the pearl. The Lotus Sutra tells of a dragon girl who offers hers freely, so this dragon is a giver, and the An in its name speaks of grace bestowed.

May Hoa Long An draws that creature small and sets it in symmetry around a center, each dragon lifting a bodhi leaf inward, with carved borders and a lotus pedestal between. Washing Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty. Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry in shade, never in sun. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp. Wash a red square on its own the first two times, as deep reds can release a little color into water.
