At this size May Hoa Long An opens into its full composition, a silk shawl of eight dragons drawn small and set in symmetry, each offering a bodhi leaf inward, with carved borders and a lotus pedestal between them. Laid open over a black dress it reads like lacquer over gold leaf, and when you move, the silk moves with you in one slow, weighted fall.

Mulberry silk, printed by hand from a Ly Dynasty dragon redrawn out of eleventh-century stonework in Hanoi, at sixteen momme and hemmed by hand on all four sides. It is large enough to wear across the shoulders and light enough to fold into a handbag.

As the tissue parts, the silk slides over your hands with a weight and softness no photograph can hold. Silk is protein, spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm, and it handles like nothing woven from oil.

Then the weight: forty-four inches of sixteen momme silk has real presence in the hand, and that is what lets it hang in one line and stay on the shoulders where it was laid.

And then the drawing. Below 44 inches the composition is cropped; here the eight dragons close into their circle and the carved border runs unbroken around all four edges, a finished drawing you can wear.

The making of $197

This square is four times the area of the 22-inch, printed by hand screen by screen, one color at a time, on both faces, and that handwork is where the price goes.

The hem is rolled and stitched by hand on all four sides, close to fifteen feet of it, and the motif was redrawn by hand from an archive before a single screen was cut. We make the whole square in our own atelier in Hanoi and send it straight to you, which is how it comes to $197.

A dragon that gives

Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel at the center of Hanoi, was begun in 1010, and the dragon cut into its stonework is gentle, with no scales and a body tapering in a soft curve like moving water. It has three talons sharp as a hawk's, a raised head with a long mane, a pearl held at the mouth, a crest of flame lifting from the nose and, on the forehead, an S mark, the archaic character for thunder, which here means rain, rivers and a harvest that comes in.

The pearl matters most. In the Lotus Sutra the dragon girl offers her pearl, so this is a dragon that gives, and that is the heart of the name: An means grace granted.

May Hoa Long An draws that dragon small and repeats it eight times around a center, each offering a bodhi leaf inward, with carved borders and a lotus pedestal between. Washing Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty. Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry flat in shade, never in sun, and never hang a wet square this size or the weight of the water pulls the hem. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp. Wash it alone the first two times, as deep reds can release a little color into water.

Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:
