What you feel when it arrives

Lift it from the tissue and the red silk spills into your palm with more weight than you expect. It is a protein fiber spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm, with a softness and sheen that polyester, made from oil, cannot match.

People expect a small square to feel like a handkerchief, and this one has real presence: sixteen momme at 22 inches, enough weight for a knot on a bag handle to hold through a long day of travel, from the curb to the last gate.

Why $75 for the smallest one

Because a small square carries the same handwork as a large one, and proportionally more edge: the hem is rolled and stitched by hand, and on this size that still runs close to an hour.

Printing both faces sends the cloth through the press twice. The motif is drawn out of the archive by an artist in our studio, and we make the whole square in our own atelier in Hanoi and send it straight to you, which is how it comes to $75. Worn once a week for five years, it works out to under thirty cents a wear.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Each of our motifs has its own meaning; a quick way to choose is by the person and the occasion.

Buying for an achievement A promotion, a milestone, a leader, a corporate gift: choose a dragon, and you have found one of our two. This one draws the Ly Dynasty creature small and repeats it in center symmetry, a finely worked surface, while Dragon Dreams draws it large, four at the corners turning toward a bodhi leaf, like a painting.

What do you actually do with a 22-inch square?

The dragon who holds out a pearl

Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel at the center of Hanoi, dates from 1010, and the dragon cut into its stonework is a creature of grace. Ly Dynasty dragons have no scales; the body tapers to the tail in a soft curve like moving water, with three sharp talons, a raised head and long mane, a pearl at the mouth and a crest of flame lifting from the nose, and on the forehead an S mark, the old character for thunder, the promise of rain for the harvest.

The pearl matters most. In the Lotus Sutra the dragon girl offers her pearl, so this is a dragon who gives, and An in its name means grace granted.

In May Hoa Long An the creature is drawn small and set in symmetry around a center, every dragon lifting a bodhi leaf inward among carved borders and a lotus pedestal. Washing Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty. Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry in shade, never in sun. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp. Wash a red square on its own the first two times, as deep reds can release a little color into water.

Returns Thirty days from delivery, unused and unwashed, in the original box. If the fault is ours, a flaw in the silk, a print error, a seam that failed, postage goes both ways on us and you get a replacement or a full refund. Changed your mind? Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
