Wrapped over her hair, a square hides much of itself in its own folds, which is why this motif suits a wrap so well: the dragon is drawn small and repeated across the whole field, so every fold that shows carries one, bright red and finely drawn, from whatever angle she turns.

Mulberry silk in red, printed by hand from a Ly Dynasty dragon redrawn out of eleventh-century stonework in Hanoi, sixteen momme and hemmed by hand on all four sides. It is a wrap by day and a sleep wrap at night.

What red does at this size

Wrapped, over black The pairing red was made for. A black coat and a red wrap is the shortest route from dressed to finished, and at this scale it is unmistakably deliberate.

Against dark hair Where red is at its best and nothing else comes close. The contrast is the point, and it holds in every light from a kitchen to a street at night.

Camel and cream The combination that photographs richest. Red beside camel is the oldest color pairing in a winter wardrobe and it survives every year.

Navy and charcoal Where red does its best work in an office. Against navy it reads as warmth rather than contrast, so it lifts without shouting.

Where red does not work: on a day you want the outfit noticed rather than the scarf. Red gathers attention without asking what kind, and at 36 inches there is a lot of it. If you are buying your first wrap and are not certain, Dark Green is the same dragon at the same size and never does this.

What the silk feels like

Out of the tissue, the cloth speaks before the color does, with a weight and softness that invite the hand. Silk is protein, spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm, where polyester is made from oil.

Then it stays where it is tied: sixteen momme at this size has the body to hold a wrap on the crown through a commute and a whole day of turning her head.

And the red keeps its depth at this weight, and because the ink goes through the cloth, the reverse that shows at every twist of the wrap is the same red as the front.

What the $153 covers

This square is nearly twice the area of the 26-inch, printed by hand screen by screen, one color at a time, on both faces, and each extra inch means another pass under the squeegee and another length of hem rolled by hand.

The motif was drawn out of an archive by hand before any screen was cut, and we make the whole square in our own atelier in Hanoi and post it straight to you, which is how it comes to $153. Worn weekly, it costs under sixty cents a wear over five years.

Take this size if hair is the reason you are here - a full head wrap or a sleep wrap. It folds down and does everything the 26 does, but the 26 cannot come up and do this.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Each of our motifs carries its own meaning, so a few words can help you choose:

Buying for an achievement For a promotion or a leader, you are already on one of our two dragons. This one draws the dragon small and repeats it in center symmetry, a worked surface made for wrapping, while Dragon Dreams sets four large dragons at the corners, so it reads as a picture.

Buying for a person For a mother, a fresh start or a year of recovery, the phoenix is right: Phoenix Dance, the empress's bird, drawn from peacock and pheasant and printed in pastels.

Buying for a couple For weddings and anniversaries, the mandarin ducks are the pair to choose.

A good rule: the dragon for an accomplishment, the phoenix for the person.

Using it as a sleep wrap

At thirty-six inches there is enough cloth to wrap, twist and tuck long, thick or tightly coiled hair, with weight enough to stay settled until morning. The 26 inch suits shorter or finer hair.

“Is 36 inches too big for me?”

Folded once to a triangle it wears at the neck like a 26-inch square, and folded twice it becomes a headband. Its full size appears when you choose to open it, and our guide to which size to choose sets the sizes side by side.

What you cannot do is go the other way. A 26-inch square will not wrap a head with anything to spare, and it will not survive a night. If either of those is on your list, this is the size, and the extra fifty-six dollars buys you both of them permanently.

Buying this as a gift?

Red and a dragon together speak plainly in Vietnamese decorative language: congratulation, prosperity, a year turning over. At this size it is also wonderfully useful, a lovely combination in a gift.

The dragon, and the grace in its name

Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel at the center of Hanoi, was begun in 1010, and its stone dragon has no scales; its body tapers in a soft curve like moving water, with three talons sharp as a hawk's, head raised with a long mane, a pearl at the mouth and a crest of flame at the nose. The S mark on its forehead is the archaic character for thunder, and its meaning is rain, rivers and a harvest that comes in.

The pearl is the heart of it: in the Lotus Sutra the dragon girl offers her pearl, so this is a dragon that gives, and An means exactly that, grace granted.

May Hoa Long An draws that dragon small and repeats it around a center, each one offering a bodhi leaf inward, with carved borders and a lotus pedestal filling the field. Every screen was cut from our studio's own hand drawing, and our guide tells what the Dragon of Grace motif means in full.

Washing Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty. Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry in shade, never in sun. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp. Wash a red square on its own the first two times, as deep reds can release a little color into water - worth knowing if it is going to be slept in.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
  • Leaves an unpleasant burnt plastic smell and ash that forms clumps and sticks to hands.
