Twenty-six inches of mulberry silk in pastel pink, hand printed with a phoenix of the Ly and Tran Dynasty, redrawn from carving in the temples of northern Vietnam. At sixteen momme it holds a knot all day, and it ties in a moment.

Where pastel pink looks loveliest

What the silk tells the hand

Draw it from the tissue and the cloth is what she notices before the color: silk is a protein spun by the Bombyx mori silkworm, where polyester is made from oil.

Pink is also the hardest color to photograph and the easiest to love in person. Screens push it toward candy or toward beige, so the square that arrives reads deeper and softer than its picture, closer to the inside of a shell than to anything in a stationery shop, a difference people find a lovely surprise.

And it rests where she places it. Sixteen momme falls in a single piece, so a knot holds through the commute, the meetings and the dinner that follows.

What goes into $97

Polyester squares sell for $18 and can look similar in a photograph; in the hand they are a different material entirely, missing the weight and soft glow of silk.

Every stage is handwork. Rolling the hem takes close to an hour, and hand screen printing needs one screen and one pass for each color in this finely drawn phoenix. Researching the bird from period temple carving and redrawing it is a craft in itself, and because we make the whole square in our own atelier in Hanoi and post it straight to you, it comes to $97. Worn once a week for five years, it costs under forty cents a wear.

First one? Take the 26. It is the only square that does hair and neck equally well. Phoenix Dance is also the one motif we print as a 6 × 106 cm twilly at $57, if you want the pattern at its smallest before committing.

Which motif should I be looking at?

Each motif carries its own wish, and a few lines will help you find the one for her.

Buying for a person A mother, a new chapter, a recovery, a woman you want to celebrate for who she is: this is the one. The phoenix is the empress's bird, counterpart to the emperor's dragon, a wish for grace, rebirth and peace, and soft pastels suit that tender meaning.

The phoenix, and the meaning she carries

Three motifs recur throughout Vietnamese temple ornament, each carrying its own meaning. The lotus is Buddhist, a symbol of purity and stillness and the seat of the Buddha, while the dragon is imperial and belongs to water, to rain and rivers and a harvest brought home.

The phoenix is the empress's bird, partner to the emperor's dragon, and together the pair speak of harmony and balance. On beam ends, stair flanks and roof corners she carries wishes for peace, prosperity, grace and rebirth, a gentle and human meaning for a motif so old.

She is drawn holding a pearl and moving through cloud, and in the source her plumage carries five colors, one for each of the five elements. This is the Ly and Tran drawing, graceful and fluid, from the period of the One Pillar Pagoda and Chua Dam.

Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:
