Why a phoenix for a new mother

The phoenix is the bird of change and of starting again, and in Vietnam it belongs to women. It was the empress's bird, the partner of the emperor's dragon.

Ours is drawn in the soft Ly style from temple carving of the Ly and Tran Dynasties. Carvers put it on roof corners and stair flanks to say that all was well.

It holds a pearl and rises through cloud, feathers in five colors for the five elements. The short version is simple: it means things are well.

We make it in pastel pink because the meaning asks for softness, not drama.

Hands full, sleep short? The 26 or the twilly are the easiest to wear. A headband takes seconds.

Is it real silk?

It is 100% Grade 5A mulberry silk, 16 momme. The Textile Testing Center of the Vietnam Textile Research Institute tested it. That is an independent lab, not ours.

The box includes a small cutting of the same silk, so you can test it yourself.

Burn a thread or a corner of the cutting over a sink, away from anything flammable, with no children nearby. Silk burns with a smell like burning hair and leaves a soft ash that crushes between your fingers. Polyester melts into a hard bead. It is a home check, not lab proof.

Will she have time to wear a scarf?

A headband or ponytail wrap takes under a minute, and on a tired day it pulls an outfit together.

Washing is simple too: cold water and a little shampoo, every few wears.

Why $57 to $197

Three things set the price. The hem is hand-rolled, close to an hour per square. Both faces are printed, one screen and one pass per color. And the motif was redrawn from archive sources before any screen existed.

Going up from the 26 to the 36 nearly doubles the silk.

Wear the 26 inch once a week for five years. That is under 40 cents a wear.

We work from our own Hanoi atelier and ship direct. The US import duty is on us.

When should it arrive?

Processing takes 1 to 3 business days. Delivery to the US takes 9 to 15 business days after dispatch.

Babies ignore schedules, so aim for the weeks after the birth, when the visitors thin out.

Allow up to 18 business days for a fixed date, about three and a half weeks.

Duties and returns

Duties: covered by us. She pays nothing when it arrives.

Returns: 30 days, in the original box, unused, unwashed and unworn. Return postage for a change of mind is paid by you, and store credit comes with an extra 15%.

How to care for it

Cold water, shampoo or body wash, no detergent. Every 3 to 5 wears is plenty.

Never wring it. Press out the water and dry it flat, out of the sun. Iron it damp on the lowest silk setting.

Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

  • Melts rather than burns.
