How to Wear a 36 Inch Silk Scarf (90x90 cm): The Most Versatile Size

Alice Nguyen

Quick answer: A 36 inch (90x90 cm) silk scarf is large enough to cover the hair, knot at the neck with long tails, drape over the shoulders or tie at the waist. Start with a bias fold: fold two opposite corners to the center, then fold in from both long sides until you have a band. Almost every style begins there.

Shake out a 90x90 silk scarf in front of a mirror and it falls almost to your knees, the print opening across the whole square. Fold it twice and the same piece becomes a soft band you can knot in under a minute. That range is why this size earns its place.

Why the 90x90 silk scarf is the most versatile size

At 36 inches a side, the square is long enough on the diagonal (about 51 inches, or 127 cm) to wrap the head and still tie with tails, yet small enough to sit neatly at the neck without bulk. A 26 inch square runs short for full head wraps and waist ties. A 44 inch square is generous for shoulders but heavy for a neat neck knot.

In French the classic large silk square is called a carré, which simply means square. When people search for a 90x90 silk foulard or a carré, this is the size they mean. Ours is 100% mulberry silk at 16 momme, which works out to about 69 grams per square meter (about 2 ounces per square yard), hand screen-printed through both faces, one screen for each color, with edges rolled and stitched by hand.

How to fold a 36 inch silk scarf

Two folds cover nearly every style.

The bias fold (for bands)

  1. Lay the scarf flat as a diamond, one corner pointing toward you.
  2. Fold the top and bottom corners in so they meet at the center.
  3. Fold each long side in toward the middle, then fold in half along the length.
  4. Repeat until the band is the width you want, from about 1 inch for a belt to 3 inches for a headband.

Folding on the bias (corner to corner) gives the band a little stretch, so it curves around the neck and the head more easily than a band folded straight.

The triangle fold (for drape)

Fold one corner to the opposite corner. Use this for head scarves, shoulder drapes and the cowboy knot.

How to wear a 90x90 silk scarf: 10 ways

1. Full head scarf

Fold into a triangle and place the long edge across your hairline. Take the two ends to the nape, cross them over the point, bring them back to the front, and tie a small knot at the top or the side. On a 36 inch square the tails are long enough to tuck in or leave loose.

2. Classic neck knot with tails

Make a bias band about 3 inches wide. Drape it around the neck with one end slightly longer, then tie a single loose knot at the side of the collarbone. Let both tails fall.

3. Shoulder drape

Open the triangle and lay it across the back with the point down, the two ends falling over the front of each shoulder. Knot the ends loosely at the chest, or fasten them with a scarf ring. Over a sleeveless dress in the evening, this gives coverage without a jacket.

4. Cowboy knot

Fold a triangle, put the point at the front of your chest, cross the ends behind the neck and tie them at the back or the side. The silk falls in soft folds over the collarbone.

5. Low ponytail wrap

Make a 2 inch band. Wrap it twice around a low ponytail over the elastic and tie a bow. A 36 inch square leaves long ribbons that move with the hair.

6. Wide headband

Fold a band about 3 inches wide, place the center at the nape and tie on top of the head, slightly off-center. The extra length lets you wrap it twice for a turban-like band.

7. Belt

Fold a narrow band about 1 inch wide and thread it through the belt loops of jeans or wide trousers. Tie a square knot at the hip and let the tails hang.

8. Bag accent

Knot a band at the base of a tote handle and let the long tails swing. For smaller bags, a 22 inch square or a twilly is easier; see how to wear a silk twilly.

9. Ascot for a man or woman

Make a 4 inch bias band. Drape it around the neck, cross the long end over the short one, bring it up through the neck loop and let it fall flat over the crossing. Tuck it inside an open shirt collar.

10. Sun hat band

Make a 2 inch band and wrap it twice around the crown of a straw hat, knotting at the side. The long tails can trail down the back over the brim.

How to wear a very large silk scarf without looking costumed

Keep the rest of the outfit plain: a white shirt, a navy sweater, a camel coat. Pull one color from the print into a single other piece, such as shoes or a bag, and stop there. Tie knots small and slightly off-center, and let the silk move instead of pinning it flat. A 36 inch scarf has plenty of print, so it carries an outfit by itself. Choosing a 36 inch print

A large square shows the whole drawing, so the motif matters more than at smaller sizes. Dragon Dreams carries a Ly dynasty dragon from the Thang Long citadel: four dragon heads in the corners turn toward a bodhi leaf at the center. It suits a gift for a promotion, a graduation or a new business. Phoenix Dance stands for grace, renewal and a new chapter, a fit for a mother, a wife or a woman starting something new. Caring for a 90x90 silk scarf

Wash in cold water with a little shampoo or body wash, do not wring, dry flat in the shade and iron on the lowest silk setting while damp. Dry cleaning is the safest choice. Long exposure to light yellows and weakens silk, so store it away from sun. Full steps are in how to care for a silk scarf.
