A dragon for work that paid off

Vietnamese dragons began as river creatures of farming villages, and the Ly Dynasty drew them that way: no scales, three claws, bodies that bend like water.

Each of the four on this square carries the old thunder character on its forehead. Thunder brings rain; rain brings the harvest. It is a picture of effort turning into a result.

They come from Hanoi's imperial citadel, Hoang Thanh Thang Long, begun in 1010. Between them are fragrance clouds, lotus flowers and a bodhi leaf at the center.

Green and yellow give it the warmth of glazed ceramics from the period. Against camel, cream or denim the yellow does the work.

Is it real silk?

Yes: 100% Grade 5A mulberry silk. Tested at the Textile Testing Center, Vietnam Textile Research Institute. It is an outside lab.

Every box holds a small silk cutting for testing.

Burn a thread or a corner of it over a sink, away from anything flammable, with no children nearby. Silk burns with a smell like burning hair and leaves a soft ash that crushes between your fingers. Polyester melts into a hard bead. It is a home check, not lab proof.

I have never worn a scarf

No pins, rings or skill. Four ties anyone manages in under a minute: headband, ponytail wrap, neck knot, bag roll.

Why $75 to $197

Start with the hem, rolled and stitched by hand: close to an hour, even on a small square. Each face is printed separately, one color at a time. The artwork was redrawn by hand from archive sources.

Going from 26 to 36 inches nearly doubles the silk: 676 against 1,296 square inches.

The hand-rolled edge grows from about 8.5 to 12 feet.

Wear the 26 inch once a week for five years. That is under 40 cents a wear.

It is all made in our Hanoi atelier and shipped direct, with the duty paid by us.

How long will it take?

1 to 3 business days of processing in Hanoi, then 9 to 15 business days to a US address.

Door to door it takes about two to three and a half weeks, at most 18 business days.

Duties and returns

Duties: we pay the US import duty, so you owe nothing at the door.

Returns: 30 days, unused, unwashed and unworn, in the original box. Change-of-mind return postage is paid by you. Choose store credit instead of a refund and we add 15%.

How to care for it

Every 3 to 5 wears is enough. Silk does not hold dust.

Cold water with shampoo or body wash, not laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry flat in the shade. Iron on the lowest silk setting while it is still damp.
