Picture the moment after the contract is signed: you slide a slim box across the table, and inside, folded in tissue, lies a red dragon silk scarf whose story begins in an eleventh-century citadel. It looks like what it is, a gift chosen with thought, and it travels flat in a briefcase.

Dragon Of Grace in red is 100% Grade 5A mulberry silk at 16 momme, printed by hand on both faces in our Hanoi atelier and finished with a hand-rolled edge you can feel between finger and thumb.

A dragon of grace, offered with respect

In a business gift the story matters, and this one is easy to tell. The dragon comes from Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel in Hanoi, begun in 1010 under the Ly Dynasty, and our guide to what the Dragon of Grace motif means sets out the rest.

The Ly dragon is slender and curved, with no scales and a pearl at its mouth, its body moving like water. Here the dragons are drawn small and arranged around a still center, where bodhi leaves and a lotus pedestal complete the composition.

"Long An" means a dragon of grace, favor freely given. For a client or a partner, it carries exactly the respect you mean to show.

Red gives this even, composed layout its warmth, the color deepening in every fold. Against a dark coat it reads as confident and gracious, never loud.

Is it real silk?

It is 100% Grade 5A mulberry silk, 16 momme. The Textile Testing Center of the Vietnam Textile Research Institute tested it. That is an independent lab, not ours.

The box includes a small cutting of the same silk, so you can test it yourself.

Burn a thread or a corner of the cutting over a sink, away from anything flammable, with no children nearby. Silk burns with a smell like burning hair and leaves a soft ash that crushes between your fingers. Polyester melts into a hard bead. It is a home check, not lab proof.

What if the recipient is a man?

Give him a tie instead. Our woven dragon ties carry a Ly Dynasty dragon too, woven into jacquard silk, for $82.

The making behind $75 to $197

Three kinds of handwork set the price. The hem is rolled by hand, close to an hour per square; both faces are printed, one screen and one pass per color; and the motif was redrawn from archive sources before any screen existed.

Going from 26 to 36 inches nearly doubles the silk: 676 against 1,296 square inches.

Along the way, the hand-rolled edge grows from about 8.5 to 12 feet.

We work from our own Hanoi atelier and ship direct. The US import duty is on us.

Will it arrive before my trip?

1 to 3 business days of processing in Hanoi, then 9 to 15 business days to a US address.

Allow up to 18 business days to a US address, about three and a half weeks.

Order early and pack it yourself. A folded square travels flat.

Duties and returns

Duties: we pay the US import duty, so you owe nothing at the door.

Returns: 30 days, unused, unwashed and unworn, in the original box. Change-of-mind return postage is paid by you. Choose store credit instead of a refund and we add 15%.

How to care for it

Every 3 to 5 wears is enough. Silk does not hold dust.

Cold water with shampoo or body wash, not laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry flat in the shade. Iron on the lowest silk setting while it is still damp.

Silk is a completely natural fiber with a production process that does not require the use of chemicals for bleaching or fiber processing. Therefore, silk is not only environmentally friendly but also gentle on the skin.

Distinguishing natural silk from synthetic silk fabrics can be based on various factors such as texture, surface effect, softness, light reflection, and how the fabric reacts to temperature. Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:

  • Burns quickly but extinguishes immediately.
  • Leaves ash that smells like burnt hair, crumbles easily, and does not stick to hands.

Silk blended with synthetic fibers

  • Melts rather than burns.
  • Leaves an unpleasant burnt plastic smell and ash that forms clumps and sticks to hands.

The materials used in Folk Form’s products are independently tested at the Textile Testing Center (TTC) under the Vietnam Textile Research Institute.
