What the phoenix says to her

A phoenix is about who a person is, not what she achieved. It stands for grace, resilience and starting again.

This one comes from Ly and Tran Dynasty temple carving in northern Vietnam, the era of the One Pillar Pagoda. Carvers set it on beam ends and roof corners to say peace had come.

It rises through cloud with a pearl, its feathers in five colors. The line to hand over with it is short: it is a Ly Dynasty phoenix, and it means things are well.

In Vietnam, green is the phoenix we suggest for reuniting with an old friend.

Is it real silk?

Yes, Grade 5A mulberry silk, all of it. An outside lab confirmed it. The Textile Testing Center belongs to the Vietnam Textile Research Institute.

Test it at home with the small silk cutting in the box.

Burn a corner of it over a sink, away from anything flammable, with no children nearby. Silk burns with a smell like burning hair and leaves a soft ash that crushes between your fingers. Polyester melts into a hard bead. It is a home check, not lab proof.

What if she never wears scarves?

Almost nobody uses a scarf just one way. On a bag handle or tied at the wrist, it works for people who never wear one at the neck.

The twilly is the smallest step: a ribbon, not a scarf.

Start with the hem, rolled and stitched by hand: close to an hour, even on a small square. Each face is printed separately, one color at a time. The artwork was redrawn by hand from archive sources.

Going from 26 to 36 inches nearly doubles the silk: 676 against 1,296 square inches.

The hand-rolled edge grows from about 8.5 to 12 feet.

It is all made in our Hanoi atelier and shipped direct, with the duty paid by us.

Among these, the "burn test" is the most effective and definitive method. Here are the characteristics of different materials when subjected to the burn test:
