Here is the problem nobody explains before you buy a pale scarf. A single soft color sits against your face and either lifts it or drains it, and which one happens depends on your complexion and on the light in the room. Green alone can pull sallow on warm skin. Pink alone can go flat on cool skin. Neither is a flaw in the color, it is what one color does.
Putting both on the same square solves it. There is always one of the two doing the work at your jaw, whichever way your skin runs, and whichever light you are standing in. That is the whole reason this colorway exists.

Where it actually gets used
The neck knot, over a plain shirt Folded to a triangle, rolled, wrapped once, knotted loose and slid off-center. This is where the two colors earn their keep, because it is the fold that puts them closest to your face.
The headband Fold corner to corner, roll into a band, tie at the nape, tuck the tails. Third-day hair, handled in thirty seconds.
The ponytail wrap Wind twice around the elastic, knot on top, let the ends fall.
The bag handle Roll narrow, wind it up the handle, small bow. Where it lives on the days it is not worn, which is why it never ends up in a drawer.
Where this colorway does not work: when the point is that today is not an ordinary day. Pastels read considered, not celebratory. Dark Red is the same drawing in the version that announces itself, and Black and Orange is the one for evening.

The part no photograph gets across
Take it out of the tissue and the first thing that registers is not the color, it is the temperature. Cool for about four seconds, then it matches your hand exactly and stays there. Nothing made from oil does that.
The second is that these two colors sit at almost the same lightness. That sounds like a technical detail and it is the reason this square behaves. When two colors are far apart in lightness, one leads in daylight and the other takes over under a lamp, and the scarf looks like a different object in the evening. Held level, this one reads the same at a window and at a dinner table.
The third is that it stays where you put it. Sixteen momme has enough weight to fall in one piece rather than drift, so a knot holds through a commute, a meeting and dinner without a single adjustment.

Two colors printed at equal weight On a two-color ground the temptation is to lay one color down properly and let the second one carry less pigment, because on a photograph nobody can tell. On cloth against a face they can. If the pink is thinner than the green, the pink disappears at arm's length and the whole square reads as a green scarf with something on it. Both go down at full strength, one screen and one pass each.

If you try it: over a sink, clear of anything that can catch, not with children in the room. A corner is enough.
There is a second test that suits a pale ground better. Hold the cutting up to a window. Grade describes how long, how even and how clean the reeled filament is, and 5A sits near the top of that scale. Against the light it should read as one continuous surface rather than as thread. The silk also carries results from the Textile Testing Center at the Vietnam Textile Research Institute.

Why $97 and not $18
The $18 one is polyester. It is not a cheaper route to the same object, it is a different object that resembles this in a photograph and behaves nothing like it against skin. She will know inside three seconds, and so will you.
Everything above costs money to do. The hand-rolled hem runs close to an hour and this square carries 260 centimeters of it. Two colors at full strength means the cloth goes through the press twice as many times as a single ground, and then twice again for the second face. Researching the motif off period architectural fragments and redrawing it means paying somebody to do that. We make the whole thing in our own atelier in Hanoi and post it straight to you, and that is the only reason the number is $97 rather than several times it.

Getting it there in time
If there is a date attached to this, it is worth reading before you order.
Nine to fifteen business days to a US address, counted from the day it leaves Hanoi. That is the honest range, not a best case.
Add a week in December, and add a week around Lunar New Year in late January or February. Both holidays slow things down at both ends — ours and yours.

Which motif should I be looking at?
Folk Form prints several motifs and they are not interchangeable. This is the shortest honest map of them:
Buying for somebody who kept their dignity through something A teacher, a retirement, a long recovery, a person who held their character in circumstances that did not deserve it. That is this one. In Vietnamese the lotus is described as growing in mud and not smelling of it, and that image is the entire meaning.
Buying for a person, about who they are A mother, a new chapter, a fresh start. Phoenix Dance — the empress bird, and the one motif in Vietnamese temple decoration that carries no religious weight. It simply signals that things are well.
Buying for an achievement A promotion, a milestone, a corporate gift. Dragon territory, and there are two. Dragon Dreams puts large dragons at the corners so it reads as a picture. Dragon of Grace repeats the same animal small in center symmetry, so it reads as a worked surface.
Buying for a couple A wedding, an engagement, an anniversary. Lotus Serenade puts two mandarin ducks under the same flower, which is the marriage reading rather than the personal one.
Rough rule: dragons for what somebody did, phoenix for who somebody is, the lotus alone for how somebody carried it, and the ducks for two people.
“I love these, but I would never know how to tie one”
This is the real reason silk scarves die in drawers, so let us be plain: there is no skill in it. No pins, no rings, nothing to memorize. If you can tie a shoelace you will get all four of these first time, at a mirror, in under a minute.

This is the safest square in the shop to buy for somebody whose taste you are not certain of. Two colors instead of one means you are not betting on her complexion, the 26-inch is the size that gets used most, and there is no measurement to get wrong.
It also hands her something to say. When somebody compliments it she does not answer it was a gift. She answers: it is a lotus from the old citadel in Hanoi, and in Vietnamese it means keeping your character in circumstances that do not deserve it.
For a teacher, or somebody retiring The meaning is unusually specific and it is the reason to choose this motif over the others. It says you noticed what it cost them, without a speech and without a card.
For a mother, no occasion at all A gift with a real meaning given on an ordinary Wednesday lands harder than the same gift on a date she was already expecting something.
For somebody who has never worn a scarf No skill required, no size to guess, and at 26 inches it is the one square that does hair and neck equally well. If she likes it she will know exactly what to buy next.

The lotus, and why it was a building material
Most people meet the lotus as a symbol. In Hanoi it was structural.
When archaeologists excavated Hoang Thanh Thang Long, the imperial citadel begun in 1010, they found stone column bases carved with lotus petals. Those bases carried the weight of the palace roof. The flower was not painted on afterward — it was cut into the stone that held the building up.
It appears everywhere else in that eleventh to fifteenth century layer too: in the ponds inside the citadel walls, in sculpture, and glazed onto the ceramics the court used, both the pale green celadon and the blue-glazed ware.
The reason is a single Vietnamese line that every schoolchild still learns: the lotus grows in mud and does not smell of it. It is the standard image for keeping your character in circumstances that do not deserve it, and it is why the flower ended up on the parts of a palace that had to bear weight rather than on the parts that were only looked at.
Our studio redraws the motif by hand from archive photographs of the excavated pieces, then splits the drawing into screens. Hand screen printing means one screen and one pass for every color, panel by panel, in Hanoi. Not a file an algorithm sold to a thousand brands.

Washing Easier than people fear, and less often. Silk sheds dust on its own, so every three to five wears is plenty. Cold water, shampoo or body wash rather than laundry detergent. Squeeze, never wring. Dry in shade, never in sun, and keep it away from perfume sprayed after it is on. Iron on the lowest silk setting while still faintly damp. One note specific to a pale ground: it shows the mark hair oil leaves sooner than a dark one, so worn in hair it wants washing more often than one worn at the neck.
