A river dragon, for a week near the water
The dragons on this dress belong to the Ly Dynasty, whose court began the imperial citadel in Hanoi in 1010. In Vietnam the dragon started life as a river creature, tied to the farming villages that lived on its water.
So it is drawn like water: no scales, three claws, a long body that bends the way a river bends. It is much closer to the naga of Buddhist art than to the fire-breathing dragon of Western films.
Dragon of Grace draws that animal small and repeats it around a center, with bodhi leaves and lotus in between. On yellow the repeat reads light and even, easy to wear for a whole evening.
From the beach path to the table
At dinner Flat leather sandals, gold hoops, hair up. Nothing else needed.
After sunset A white linen shirt worn open over it, or the yellow Dragon of Grace square, 26 inch, tied loosely at the neck.
Walking into town The dress has no waist seam. For more shape, knot a plain belt or sash at the waist.

These are the measurements of the dress, not of your body:

- Chest, laid flat: 20.5 in / 52 cm
- Bust, all around: 41 in / 104 cm
- Length from shoulder: 50.4 in / 128 cm
The standard cut drapes loosely on a bust up to 37 in / 94 cm. There is no waist seam, so it skims the body rather than fitting close.

Is it real silk?
Yes, it is 100% mulberry silk, made from the hand-printed silk panels we also sell as scarves.

Why $386
Most of the cost is cloth and printing. A maxi takes a great deal of silk, and every panel of it is screen-printed by hand, one screen per color.
The panels are placed so the pattern lines up at the seams, then the dress is cut and sewn to order in our Hanoi atelier. We ship it straight to you and pay the US import duty, so $386 is all you pay.
Will it arrive before I leave?
Standard size: it leaves Hanoi within 1 to 3 business days and takes 9 to 15 business days to reach a US address. Order about three and a half weeks before your departure.
Made to measure: add 3 to 5 business days of tailoring before dispatch.
What if it is not right?
Standard size: you have 30 days to send it back, unworn, unwashed and in its original box. If you changed your mind, the return postage is yours. Choose store credit and we add 15%.
Made to measure: not covered by the 30-day return. One alteration is included, free.

A holiday dress makes a generous send-off, as long as the size is right.
