Every bead is a different piece of the same drawing.
Which is why no two of them match, and why a machine cannot do it.
These are wrapped in the same printed silk we make scarves from. Cut that cloth into pieces small enough to cover a bead and something happens automatically: each piece lands on a different part of the motif. One bead carries a fragment of the dragon's tail, the next a piece of cloud, the next almost nothing at all.
That is not a design decision so much as a consequence, and it is the reason a printed strand looks different from every angle while a plain one looks the same. It is also why two of these are never identical, even from the same run.

Three lengths from one necklace
Long, as it comes Over the head, hanging to just below the sternum. On a navy strand this is the version that reads as a line of color rather than as jewelry, and it is what makes a plain crewneck look deliberate.
Doubled Two strands at collarbone and mid-chest. The print becomes denser at close range, which is where it is actually seen — a printed bead is a small thing and it rewards being nearer.
Knotted once A loose knot at the sternum. It shortens the strand, breaks the line, and puts the beads at slightly different angles so more of the print faces out.
Navy is the version that goes with the most and announces the least. If you want the strand itself to be the thing somebody comments on, the marble prints carry two colors moving through every bead. The plain colorways at $64 are the quietest of the three.
FROM THE ATELIER
A printed strand takes longer to assemble than a plain one because we turn each bead so the busier part of the print faces outward, and that is a judgement call rather than a step.
Navy is the one we make most of, and the one that comes back least — it goes with what people already own instead of asking them to build around it.
The same cloth as the scarves
This is not printed silk bought in for the purpose. It is the cloth from our own press, screen-printed one color at a time on the same run as the squares, and what goes into wrapping beads is the same material at the same weight.
Practically that means two things. A necklace and a scarf can be bought in the same motif and they will actually match, which almost never happens when accessories are sourced separately. And if you already own one of our squares, there is a colorway here that belongs with it.
Tell us at checkout if you are buying both and we will cut them from the same length of cloth, so the navy is the same navy rather than one dye lot apart.
Three things it lets you stop doing
A specification is worth nothing until you can say what changes because of it.
Forty-four inches goes over the head, so there is nothing to fasten behind your neck and nothing to work loose during the day. There is also no metal in the piece at all, which matters if that is something you have to think about.
You stop asking somebody to do it up for you.
On a printed strand the wrap has a busier side and a quieter one, and somebody decides which way each bead faces as it goes on the cord. Machine assembly cannot make that call, which is why machine-made printed beads look randomly patchy rather than evenly worked.
You stop seeing blank beads next to crowded ones.
Beads sit at the neckline, which is where perfume, lotion and hairspray land, and a pale ground shows every one of those marks. Navy does not. It is the practical reason this is the colorway people wear daily rather than occasionally.
You stop keeping it for good days.
Why $75, when the plain is $64
Because the cloth went through the press before it was ever cut into wrapping. Hand screen printing is one screen and one pass for every color in the motif, and that happens to a full length of silk regardless of what it later becomes.
The assembly is slower too. Each bead has to be turned so the print sits well before it goes on the cord, and that is a decision made forty-odd times per strand rather than a step repeated. Beyond that it is the same object: same silk, same hand wrapping, same knotted cord, no metal. We make it in Hanoi, post it straight to you, and pay the US import duty.
How to care for a silk-wrapped necklace
Do not put it in water. This is the one piece we make that cannot be washed at all. Each bead has a core inside the silk and an adhesive holding the wrap closed, and soaking the strand will loosen both. There is no way back from it.
Wipe it instead. A slightly damp cloth on the surface, then leave it to dry flat, away from heat.
Put it on last. Perfume, hairspray and body lotion all mark silk, and the neckline is where all three land. Dress, spray, then put the necklace on.
Store it flat, not wound. Wound tightly the strand takes a set and the beads sit against each other. Flat in the box it came in is ideal.
Keep it out of direct sun. Sunlight fades a printed silk faster than anything else that will happen to it.
What it is made of, exactly
A fair question, because silk-wrapped beads are not a common object and the phrase does not tell you much.
Each bead is a light core — not stone, not metal — covered by hand in a piece of 100% mulberry silk cut from printed cloth. The silk is drawn around the bead and closed at one point, and that join is turned inward as the strand is assembled so it faces away from the eye.
Between the beads the cord is knotted. That does two things: it stops the beads rubbing against each other, and if the cord ever breaks you lose one bead rather than all of them.
The result is closer in feel to fabric than to jewelry. It moves when you move, it does not swing, and it makes no sound.
Getting it there in time
If there is a date attached to this, it is worth reading before you order.
Nine to fifteen business days to a US address, counted from the day it leaves Hanoi. That is the honest range, not a best case.
Add a week in December, and add a week around Lunar New Year in late January or February. Both holidays slow things down at both ends — ours and yours.
Ship it straight to her. Sending it to yourself first and forwarding it adds a week you do not need to spend. We write your note by hand and there is no price anywhere in the parcel.

Jewelry is difficult to give because taste in metal is specific and hard to guess. This sidesteps the problem entirely: there is no metal in it, no size to get right, and nothing that has to match what she already owns.
